Image and brushes

How can I set my own image size in Flame Painter?

You can set your own image size in Flame Painter's menu: "File"->"New".

How can I change the image size?

With Flame Painter 3, you can change image size from menu: “Edit“ -> “Image Size...“. This feature is not available in v.2.

I am not able to save my higher resolution painting in Flame Painter. What am I doing wrong?

If you are using Flame Painter 1, the problem might be in the resolution of the picture being too high. As Flame Painter 1 version is only 32 bit, it can use maximum 3GB of RAM. Please close other opened programs - it might happen that Flame Painter is not able to use the memory because of them. Flame Painter 2 and 3 is a 64bit application, where all the memory will be used. However, keep in mind that the maximum canvas resolution depends on your computer’s memory - it's usually at least 5000x5000 pixels.

The brush stroke edges in Flame Painter 2 seem to be jagged. What is the problem?

To get the highest quality brush strokes, set the “Details“ of the brush to 4 (highest value) and choose "Supersmooth Antialiasing". Please note: when setting the parameter to "Supersmooth Antialiasing", the application can slow down, because it’s more compute intensive than "Normal Antialiasing". In Flame Painter 3 we added "HiRes renderer", which is a polygonal renderer and fills the small spaces between dots and makes the picture without the appearance of Moire artifacts.

How does DPI work in Flame Painter?

DPI is saved with the image. You can set the size in pixels and DPI value in menu: “File“ -> “New“. When you save your image, you can print it in from an external program with actual DPI settings.

What is the alpha channel?

Alpha channel is a transparency channel which contains transparency information about the image. It is useful if you want to compose your painting as a layer in the third party applications like Photoshop or Gimp.
Here is link with more information about the alpha channel: What is alpha matting?

I see there is an online Brushes Gallery on your website. How can I use these brushes in my Flame Painter?

You can click on the brush and simply drag & drop* it from the Brushes Gallery directly to your Flame Painter Brushes Panel. You can also download them to your Brushes folder – to find it, go to Flame Painter menu: 'Help' -> 'Show Brushes Folder'.
* Drag & drop feature is available from Flame Painter 2.

For which application does Copy & Paste layer feature work?

Copy & Paste with alpha channel works and is tested in GIMP and Pixelmator, but it works with more applications. Without alpha channel it works in Corel Painter, Photoshop and other applications which use basic clipboard. If you have tested it with other applications – please let us know how it works.

For which Photoshop version can I use the Flame Painter plugin?

Flame Painter 3 features Flame Painter Connect, a Photoshop plug-in for CS5, CS5.5, CS6 and CC, which runs in the background as a communication channel between two applications.
Please note: Flame Painter Connect is not compatible with Photoshop CC 2014 at this moment. We are finishing CC 2014 version these days so it will be available for download very soon. (edited 2.12.2014)

For Photoshop CS6 and CC double click on "Flame_Painter_Connect_1.0.1.zxp" file and install it through Adobe Extension Manager.
For Photoshop CS5 and CS5.5 or if Adobe Extension Manager is not installed on system, manually copy "Flame_Painter_Connect_1.0.1.swf" file to Photoshop installation folder.
