9 October Art Challenges You Should Not Miss

A- | A+

Artober is almost here! Are you still deciding which art challenge to join? Look no further! We have made a list of 9 art challenges you should definitely not miss this October.

The month of October belongs to the arts. People celebrate all types of arts, support artists, and raise awareness more than usual. In 1993, a tradition of National Art Week turned to a National Arts and Humanities Month in the U.S.A., which established the foundation of the biggest coast-to-coast collective recognition of arts and culture. Later, the celebration of creativity during the month of October spread all over the world, and especially, all over social media, where it became known as #artober.

If you like to paint or draw, you have surely heard about art challenges that are held by different organizations and artists during October. Each day or week you will receive a different prompt and later share your artwork. These are not art contests! They are just challenges with a focus on spending more time doing what you love, following a theme, practicing different techniques, and celebrating art. Have you joined one before? If not, now is the perfect time to choose one that suits you best.

CREEPTOBER by Kickin the Creatives
Halloween is just behind the corner, therefore one of the most popular themes for art challenges is this spooky holiday. As every month, Kickin the creatives published prompts for their art challenge. For October, it is a Creeptober theme. You can join and create something "creepy" every day. As the description says, create anything you like, from a pumpkin carving to a drawing, a painting, write a poem, a creepy story, a scary photo, or a spooky sculpture.

Tales from DRAWLLOWEEN
Chad Wherle, Ohio based artist enjoys creating spooky drawings. Halloween and campy 80’s horror stories are his favorite themes and he loves following them all year round. Each October, Chad calls other artists to join him and draw spooky art in the Tales from Drawlloween challenge. His prompt list is full of Halloween topics like pumpkins, ghosts, spiders, haunted houses, which gives you a great opportunity to take these prompts to another level and come up with something unique following popular topics.

Each of the 6 prompts will focus on one act of every great circus or carnival. "Whether you fancy a pencil, stylus, a makeup brush, or a block of clay, we want to see what sinister inspiration you conceive to dazzle and delight us with!", the invitation says.

INKTOBER
The most popular and known October art challenge is Inktober, created by artist Jake Parker, focused on improving skills and developing positive drawing habits. Ever since it started in 2009, thousands of participants in the challenge create an ink drawing and post it online using a hashtag #inktober.
As the author explains on the website, Inktober is just a framework to get yourself to draw better, flex a little, and/or have some fun with your art. It’s a challenge to see how much you can improve your art in a month, and to be inspired or to help inspire others to do the same.⁣
Even though some controversies accompanied the challenge in recent years, Inktober is still a challenge that gathers a great number of artists from around the world sharing their skills and focusing on improving their art.

OBSCUTOBER by Nikolas Tower
A very unique art challenge created by a young artist and illustrator from Greece, known as Nikolas Tower, is called Obscutober. The title connects two words: obscure and inktober. The prompt list is filled with the most obscure words one can come up with. Most of them are abstract, which gives you the freedom to artistically interpret them as you wish. Another year of this challenge will definitely force you to search for the meaning of some words.

WITCHTOBER by Aria Illustrations
The Halloween team would not be complete without witches. Witchtober has become very popular among artists and many come up with their own art prompts inviting others to join. We have decided to point you to a witchtober challenge by a self-taught freelance artist from Budapest, Hungary, known as Aria - Illustration. She works with both digital and traditional media and is known for stylized portraits of witches. Her art is inspired by the love for natural elements, RPG games, fantasy images, Japanese culture, and anime. If you like a similar style, join Aria and follow her prompts this October.
