Steampunk by Michael Dashow

Today, we would like to introduce Michael Dashow: Senior Art Director at Kabam, a San Francisco company producing games for mobile and web. He is the one to blame for these impressive steampunk artworks, where he uses Flame Painter to create special light effects.

Read his write-ups of the pictures and feel the magic:

“Silas Killigan is a villain in a world where steampunk mixes with magic. He uses his steampunk armor to drain the life from faeries and to power the suit’s destructive abilities. Like most of my artwork, the character was sketched in pencil first and then brought into Photoshop where I painted in the details and the background. Here I used Flame Painter to produce the wispy tendrils of magic coming from his hands. This piece was done just for fun, so it maybe took me a month or two of working on it in my spare time.”

“War General vs TechnoMage was created for an international art contest known as Dominance War V. The project was to create and action scene showing two classes for a hypothetical multi-player game. I opted for a steampunk theme and used Flame Painter to help define the magical blast that the mage is about to let loose. We had about a month to complete the final piece.”

More about Michael:
Michael has worked in the games business for over 22 years, primarily as an Art Director. He has worked on Broderbund's Living Books line and Blizzard's Diablo series. Currently, he is the Senior Art Director at Kabam, a San Francisco company producing games for mobile and web. He has also been working on his own indie game Mage Maze, which you can try at mage-maze.com.

On the side of all that, he moonlights as an illustrator, creating science fiction, fantasy and steampunk paintings, often with a humorous slant to them.
