Rebelle crash or freeze - How to report it
Username: Michal Escape Motions
Post Date: 2021-01-04 17:38:21
There are two kinds of bugs covered in this post: crash and freeze.
Crash
On macOS, when a crash occurrs, Rebelle closes itself and a system crash dialog pops up. Just copy the whole text (usually several pages) and send it to [url=mailto:
]

On Windows, when a crash occurrs, Rebelle closes itself and our custom crash report dialog pops up. Please, write there a short description of what happened before the crash and click on the "Send" button. In some rare cases, the crash dialog doesn't pop up. Then, please follow these steps:
1. Download this zip archive and extract it somewhere on your disk:
For Rebelle 7: https://escapemotions.com/products/rebelle/download/Rebelle_7_crash_analyzer_Windows_64bit.zip
For Rebelle 6: https://escapemotions.com/products/rebelle/download/Rebelle_6_crash_analyzer_Windows_64bit.zip
For Rebelle 5: https://escapemotions.com/products/rebelle/download/Rebelle_5_crash_analyzer_Windows_64bit.zip
2. If you have Rebelle 6 installed in the default path "C:\Program Files\Rebelle 6\Rebelle 6.exe", go to the step 3.
Otherwise, open the file "backtrace_run.bat" in a text editor. To edit the file, click on it with your right mouse button and choose "Edit" in the context menu:

and change the path on line 4 of the "backtrace_run.bat" file to match your Rebelle 6 path.
3. Run "backtrace_run.bat" which will open a new terminal window:

and it will run Rebelle 6.
4. Try to crash Rebelle as before. Just make sure to wait for the terminal window till it closes itself.
5. You should see two new files "backtrace.out" and "out.log" which contain more info about the crash. Please, send us both files to [url=mailto:
]
and please, also include:
- Rebelle version (go to the Main Menu -> About Rebelle, you'll see the version in the upper right corner of the dialog), e.g. "Rebelle 6.0.0 Demo 64bit"
- a brief description of what you did just before the crash.
Thanks for all your help with tracking down these bugs.
Freeze
If you experience Rebelle freezing (not responding) on Windows (sorry, we don't have a mac tool for this yet), please follow these steps:
1. Download this archive: https://www.escapemotions.com/products/rebelle/download/Rebelle_freeze_analyzer_Windows_64bit.zip and unpack it on your disk. This package works for all Rebelle versions.
2. Keep using Rebelle as before and when it freezes, just run the 'backtrace_attach.bat' from the unpacked folder. You can run the bat file several times (5 should be enough). It generates a new 'backtrace.out' file which you can send us by email to [url=mailto:
]
and please, also include:
- Rebelle version (go to the Main Menu -> About Rebelle, you'll see the version in the upper right corner of the dialog), e.g. "Rebelle 6.0.0 Demo 64bit"
- a brief description of what you did just before the freeze.
Thanks for all your help with tracking down these bugs.

Hello Michal,
I have the same freezing problem on my Mac mini with an M1 processor and Rebelle 4.1. And I see that the patch that you suggest downloading is for Windows, will it work anyway?

Hi @balderarte,
the patch is for Windows users, on macOS it would help tremendously if you could write down the steps you take before you experience the crashing/freezing.
We have received many 'backtrace.out' files so far, and they keep coming, so we hope we will track down what's wrong soon.
It is most probably the same issue as on macOS.

Well, I'll tell you.
When I am painting with oil brushes and I select a color sample using the "i" key on the art I am doing, in the first minutes everything goes normal.
After several times of use (about 4-5 times), the color swatch freezes and the infamous Mac color wheel appears (the one that appears when he is processing something and takes time). Well, that time never comes, I wait to see if one day it ends and nothing.
I have forced the restart of the computer and I have reloaded the file and all the above is repainted again. This has happened to me three times. So I stopped working, and I'm looking for help.

I'm on a MacBook Pro. I click select the eyedropper tool, sample colors, and Rebelle freezes. This doesn't happen every time. It's happened twice within the first 10 minutes of using the new Rebelle 4.1. That was enough for me. I've since gone back to using 4.0.5.

I found a possile way to fix those crashes. They happend to me every few minutes on the Latest demo version.
Step 1. Open the properties of the Rebelle 4 Launcher icon and go to Compatibility. Set following Settings:
Run as Administrator, Disable Fullscreen optimizations, Set compatibility to: Windows 7
Step 2. Run the application and draw. Had no crashes for a good while? good! Then try to disable the compatibilty setting now and let the others active. See if that still works for you. It did here.

Hello,
We believe the issue has been fixed to Rebelle 4.1.2 update - download from your Community account - after you log in, go to your profile and click the "Purchases" tab.
Please keep us posted how this version works for you.

I am afraid not :( The tool for backtracing also does not seem to work anymore with the newest version.
I send the backtrace log anyway ;)

I just upgraded form Rebelle 3 to Rebelle 4. I installed Rebelle 4.2.1 but, running it causes my PC to shutdown. I don't see a BSOD and, there isn't any sort of SYCHK nor CHKDSK nor a warning about an improper shutdown when I turn the PC back on. Running Rebelle 4.2.1 triggers some sort of rapid version of pressing the shutdown button in the Windows start menu. It's impossible to use the trouble shooting program in the OP as a result.
My PC is in-between the minimum and the recommended system requirements and, I'm running Windows 7 Pro (fully updated. Rebelle 3.2.5 doesn't cause this issue. I'm regretting paying for the upgrade since I can't use Rebelle 4 at all. Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @Stjarnljus,
I'm sorry you're facing such issues. This is really rare. I don't remember we had anyone with similar issues yet. Does your computer shuts down right after running Rebelle or do you have to do something in Rebelle to make your computer shut down?
You could try to:

Run Rebelle until it shuts your computer down.

Start your computer again and try to find some clues in the "Event Viewer". Please, try to follow this guide: https://www.cyberlink.com/support/faq-content.do?id=10449

If you find anything suspicious there, please write us an email to [url=mailto:
]

In case you don't find any clues there, please, ask for a refund at the same email address.
Thanks for trying.

Hello Michal,
When I double click on the Rebelle 4 shortcut, the Rebelle 4 program window pops up and then my screen immediately goes blank and I hear my PC fans turn off (indicating the PC has shutdown). There are times when the New Artwork popup window displays allowing me to click on OK and and when that happens, there is a popup window inside of Rebelle 4 but I can never make out what it says (it's something along the lines of "creating ____", I think it might be "creating new artwork").
I don't have anything unusual in my Event Viewer log pertaining to applications. The only Errors are pertaining to source being SideBySide (this is related to SideSync) and and the source being Application (this is related to the AMD software) but I occasionaly have those errors throughout the log on days unrelated to Rebelle 4 with the same error messages.
The System errors in Event Viewer pertain to "the previous shutdown was unexpected".
There are no issues around any of the errors and, there are no errors around the times the Restart Manager was triggered.
I'm at a total loss as to why this happens. Unisntalling and reinstalling didn't resolve the issue nor did updating the video card driver.
That all having been said, it looks like running Rebelle 4 in Windows 7 compatability mode prevents the PC from shutting down. Rebelle 4 loads really slow though and it runs really slowly as well (the default brush is super laggy and choppy).
I'll take Rebelle 4 out of compatability mode later today and generate a new set of log events just to make sure I didn't miss anything and to further help in troubleshooting this issue. Once I've done so, I'll make a follow up reply here.

I unchecked the compatability mode box for Rebelle 4 and it worked fine. I went ahead and did a manual restart on my PC, waited for the reboot and everything to load, then ran Rebelle 4 again just to make sure. It ran fine. Then I went ahead and opened up the stuff I had running when I purchased the upgrade to Rebelle 4 and opened Rebeele 4 again and it ran fine.
Whatever was causing the instant PC shutdown after double clicking on Rebelle 4 is no longer occuring.
Whatever was causing the instant shutdown after clicking "OK" in the Rebelle 4 popup window (the default popup for canvas size, etc.) is no longer occuring.
Absollutely nothing has changed on my PC so . . .
I guess is this resolved though (at least for now). I'll post again if I have any further issues (hopefully I won't need to).
Thank you for trying to help Michal and, thank you Veronika for emailing me about this.

I tooam experiencingthe problem with the upgrade 4.1.2. I am runningMac OS 11.5.2. I did a recent upgrade to the OS and did a clean install of Rebelle 4.1.2. I'm findind several issues: sometimes my canvas will rotate and when I try to use the different options in tyhe Navigator, it will not go back to 0. Sometimes the precessing will continue requiring a force quit. However, without having saved prior to the force quit; when I reopen the app and choose the file I was working on, it will come up where I left off.Looking forward to a fix. Thanks

Not sure this is the same issue, but 5.02 and 5.03 (Windows) are doing a "partial freeze." That is, the selected brush still works on the canvas, but I can't select anything from the interface and I can't leave the application environment or switch to anything else currently running using either the stylus, mouse or keyboard. The only way to escape the application is to use the tool button on the Wacom Cintiq, which launches the Wacom configuration app. From there, I can get back to Windows apps, but not Rebelle. I have to kill Rebelle using CTRL-ALT-DEL.
I'm also noticing a slight decrease in performance from 5.02 to 5.03 with nano brush disabled (nano enabled renders my version unusable right now).
I love what you're trying to do with this software and it's amazing when it works, but I'm beginning to feel like a beta-tester and not the owner of the officially-released product, especially with new bugs and issues appearing in updates.

Windows 11 + R Pro 5.0.3
Freeze happens on Start up, I discovered that it happens whenever you enable Nanopixels in the visual settings.
to solve it. delete settings.ini in the folder %LocalAppData%/Escape Motions/Rebelle 5
everytime you need to enable nanopixel and then disable it before you close rebelle.

I am not sure if I can call it "freezing", but when I try to export picture as nanopixel, it is processing exporting for a very long time - endless. Do you want backtrace.out from that? Or is it just my poor PC?

Hello,
I received an email from customer support instructing me to update to version 5.0.6 and the issue has been resolved for me.
I still suggest deleting the settings.ini and recreating a new one by running Rebelle and an administrator.

I'm using the most powerful version of the Surface Laptop Studio, it's supposed to be set to use the GPU which is an NVIDIA 3050ti, but I can't tell if it's working. In general it runs smoothly, but if I use water colors and make the brush large or switch between brushes it might freeze for a few seconds. The water simulation otherwise works fine so it's odd that it gets caught up with that. I also can't get NanoPixel to run smoothly at all, as soon as I select it I can't use anything.

This morning I installed patch 5.1.5 which is the new patch. Until I installed it Rebelle 5 pro was working but as soon as I installed this patch it was crashing all the time, and is unusable. I uninstalled the complete program and restarted my computer, then I installed the previous version without the new update. I am afraid it crashed, and this was without installing the new patch. I do not understand because the previous version was working perfectly for me I have emailed the two files.

I sent this in an email a few days ago but haven't heard anything back yet so thought I'd try here. I did the update to Rebelle 5 Pro version 5.1.5.0, 64bit version for Windows 11 (and before for Windows 10) and it crashes after opening. At first, I only had issues with it crashing several minutes into working on a file, but now I open it and it crashes after a few seconds, whether I change tools, deselect a selection or anything else. Sometimes it crashes after opening and not doing anything at all. With the latest logs I sent, I don't recall whether I clicked on anything before it closed on me. I did try opening my recent file I was working on (as I had on the last few times I tried using Rebelle 5).
I have tried these things:

scanned my drives (command prompt) for corrupt windows files as I saw from the below log in Event Viewer it had issues with ntdll.dll file. But it found nothing corrupt and nothing to repair.

reinstalled Rebelle 5 pro, 5 or 6 times.

reinstalled the program another time after adjusting the security settings on windows to see if that would help. Still crashes after opening.

tried installing the Rebelle 5 pro version 5.1.4.0, and it crashes.

tried replacing the ntdll.dll file with one I know works, but could not get past the permissions on Windows.

checked all my drivers and updates in windows, all are current

tried going to visual settings to see if nano-pixel was turned on but it crashed before I could find the window lol.

got the backtrac log thing installed and sent it in an email.

I just installed the first version of rebelle 6 to see if my paintings crashing the program on opening was happening in all the versions, but it looks like it is only the latest update 6.0.2 that is the problem as I am able to successfully open my paintings in 6.0.0 without crashing the software.

I've had multiple issues with Rebelle 5 since buying it- especially with freezes/crashes to the point where I'm about to ask Escapemotions for a refund. This evening I lost a significant amount of work on a file which already autosaved. I have friends who work in animation and entertainment- one of them is an animator who asked if I felt that rebelle would be useful for concept art production art to which I emphatically said "no!". The frequent crashes of this product with the infrequency of patches this is not the least bit useful to anyone in a commercial field on a deadline.

I followed these instructions (against the computer's judgement that it could damage my computer) and the "new terminal window" never opened or tried to run Rebelle 6.
I had already updated to 6.0.5 and I still have the same issue: While working in Rebelle 6 Pro, the cursor freezes for a second or two and then the program crashes.
Very frustrating!

Hi,
Rebelle 6 Pro stops responding when I try to enable the NanoPixel feature in the Visual Settings.
When I reproduce the steps and run the backtrace file, the document later shows that the software wasn't running and there's no record of anything. I definitely run the report when Rebelle stops responding and then when I get the pop up from Windows to force close it.
Any advice?

Hello @Elena,
We would need more information about these crashes. Please follow these steps to report a crash: https://www.escapemotions.com/community/forum/t/1115/rebelle-freezing-how-to-report-it
It will help us in determining the issues causing the crashes.
Hi @heydreamer09,
what graphics card are you using? Please ecord a short video of what's happening, we will look into it. Make sure you run the latest version of Rebelle (6.0.8, today we will release 6.0.9).
Hi @bcraig,
Please send us the crash report that appears after Rebelle crashes - copy the whole text to a text file and save, then send the text file via email: [url=mailto:

Hi @Maxorro,
Which driver are you using, please?
Some users are experiencing the same crashes, it seems there is a problem with one or two of the latest Wacom drivers.
Could you please try to install an older driver?

For example, the latest driver (Wacom driver 6.4.1-3) could be causing the issues. One user tried Wacom driver 6.4.0-11 and everything ran smoothly.
Has this helped?

I am narrowing the crash problem on Windows PC to the Wacom Intuos Pro tablet and its brush. Please investigate the issue with the Wacom.
I never crashed when using the mouse. With Intuos brush the crashes come unexpectedly after few minutes of use. It happens when changing the brush size or using any tool in Rebelle.

Thank you, Veronika! Yes, going back in time and getting the older driver for my Intuos Pro fixed the crashing problem. I went back to 6.3, but I will also check 6.4.0-11. Live is beautiful again! I love Rebelle 6 Pro and now without crashes, my learning will progress much faster. Thanks again for the tip.

Just bought Rebelle 6 PRO and the program closes, when, in example, I resize a window, or pick color.
Windows 10 pro, Cintiq.

Unfortunately, I'm having a pretty bad time with Rebelle 6 Pro recently. The application will boot up fine. But when I try to open a project, it crashes, constantly. Not just one project, various projects. I'm working on an animated project but using Rebelle 6 Pro to create the backgrounds. This problem crippled my workflow as I can't finish the backgrounds as originally intended. The only solution I've been able to come up with is to stop using Rebelle (considering it won't load anything without crashing) and switch to ArtRage Vitae. Time is of the essence in completing the project and there just simply isn't time to be dealing with instability.
My main machine is a Surface Studio 2 Plus (Core i7, 32GBs of RAM, RTX 3060 with 6GBs of VRAM) fully updated. But the problem also persists when trying to run Rebelle 6 Pro on a Surface Studio Laptop also fully updated. Now here's the irony, I also have a SurfaceBook 3 and Rebelle 5 absolutely would not run correctly on it when the application debuted even though that device has a spec that's capable (Core i7, 32GBs of RAM, GTX 1660ti with 6GBs of VRAM). After a few updates, it improved but not enough to use Rebelle 5 on it as a daily driver. But Rebelle 5 worked far better on the Surface Laptop Studio (Core i7, 32GBs of RAM, RTX 3050ti with 4GBs of VRAM). Now the Surface Laptop Studio and the Surface Studio 2 Plus are having problems with Rebelle 6 Pro and I'm not even going to attempt to run it on the SurfaceBook 3 after what happened with Rebelle 5. This, is not a good look.

My copy of Rebelle 6 pro (v 6.09) crashes several times a day. Only one time did I a get a crash dialogue. I now save (very) frequently, but unfortunately often the file I was working on is corrupt and Rebelle hangs when I try and open it. Today I had three crashes (so far) while making a selection.
Computer: win 10 pro, I-9, 64 GB ram, Nvidia Geforce rtx 2080Ti.

...just crashed again - no crash diaglogue. I was doing a selection (using a Wacom pen), zoomed in with a rotated canvass. I'm having to resort to interative saves every couple of minutes. If it crashed it will corrupt my file.

I found 7 rebelle crash dumps. Would you like me to zip them up and send them to you? I have uninstalled RB6.09 and will reinstall. I hope that fixes the issue.

Hello @waltm,
Which driver are you using, please?
Some users are experiencing the same crashes, it seems there is a problem with one or two of the latest Wacom drivers.
We are in touch with the Wacom team regarding this issue and they need our users to try the following:
1. Run Rebelle and verify that Rebelle still crashes with your driver.
2. If you have "Touch" enabled in the Wacom driver settings, please try to disable it (e.g. following this guide: http://101.wacom.com/userhelp/en/TouchOptions_Display.htm) and try to crash Rebelle again.
Then enable the touch again for the next testing step.
3. Rename the file "C:\Windows\System32\WacomMT.dll" to "WacomMT.dll.backup" and try to crash Rebelle again.
Please, let us know about the result of steps 2 and 3 and if it crashes, please send us the content of the crash report dialog.
@UBiv Tnomal, please send us the crash reports following the steps on this link:

Hi Veronica, I'm sorry I did not see your reply. I'm using Wacom 6.4.1-3. I keep touch disabled. I went back to using Rebelle 5 and I've had no problems. I will enable touch & go through the steps and try v6.09 again. Thank you.

I might have found a temporary solution, it seems that its related to wacom drivers because when I used Microsoft ink instead of Wintab it doesnt seem to crash. If I use wintab the cursor starts lagging and rebelle eventually crashes. Still currently using 5.1.5. Please try it and let me know

Hi. I am using MAc OS Ventura on an M2 mac. My Rebelle app keeps opening, i choose a canvas and i get a black screen. Restarting does not help, app zapper and Clean My Mac uninstalls and reinstalls not helping. I am on the most recent undate 6.1.3. I tried downgrading, not working. It's a brand new M2 Macbook pro, maxed out memory and M2 max processor. Very frustrating. Any work arounds?

“Rebelle 6 crashes all the time, and many times the backup is erased. I would like them to review the stability of the program. For now, I have discovered that if I don’t move the image, if I don’t zoom in or use other software at the same time, it helps somewhat. I have a high-end graphics card, 64 RAM and one terabyte of capacity, so I don’t think it’s a problem with the equipment. Also, disabling the backup function improves things somewhat, but I have to save my work manually.”

The same thing happens to me, it hangs every time, that didn’t happen with Rebelle 4 and Windows 10, there may be a problem in the software programming. For now, I have discovered that if I don’t move anything, that is, I paint in one position, the program tends to be more stable. I also don’t zoom in, and I give it a modest resolution of 200.

A Rebelle programmer gave me the solution, he told me to install an old Wacom driver, 6.4.0-11, apparently the current Wacom driver has compatibility problems.
The issue is solved.

I'm using Rebelle 5.1.5 - or rather would like to. It ran well on my PC before and now - a few months since I used it - freezes on start-up.
I'll try rolling back the Wacom driver, but this is not a long-term solution to the issue if it works.

Hi there, I am new to the form and software, I have been using Krita for over a year now and all the while I have been monitoring the Rebelle software and finally desided to download the demo to work with the program. I was enjoying the experience and getting excited to purchase it while on sale; then when working on a drawing all of a sudden, the demo simply just stopped working. I saved the drawing and tried to reload it to continue with my drawing and that did not work. I thought maybe the demo time ran out so I contacted the chat bot and they advised to contact support as the demo does not have a time limit. I did email the support team and have not heard back from them as to why the freezing/stop working demo occurred. I next ask the chat bot how long the sale is valid for and was advised again to contact the support team.
Does anyone know why freezing/stop working is happening and how to fix it? Is a bug with the demo or the whole program? I understand there is a 30day return policy with the purchase but how can I trust that when I do not even receive a "Thank you for your email and will reply" type email from the support team.
I am looking forward to anyone’s thoughts.
Kindly

Hi @EtherealLucidity,
Please note the saved REB file can be opened in the full version after purchasing, the Demo is limited in opening previously saved REB files.
When you double-click Rebelle Demo, what happens? Does it open? Do you get any error messages?
Are you by any chance using Wacom? Some users are experiencing issues with Wacom drivers, it seems there is a problem with one or two of the previous Wacom drivers.
Can you download the newest driver 6.4.2-3 to see whether you are still having the same problem?

I just installed 6.2.1 and WINDOWS 11 AND i I still have this problem that Rebelle quits when I try to export a 12k x 12k OR LARGER tiff file. There is no message. The application just quits. I have been using the same computer with the same config for a year and had no problem with exporting 16k files. I sent the backtrace and out files on October 2 but have not received a response from Escape. I am sending that email again. Please check. Thanks

Hi Sanjeko,
Thank you for sending us the reports. Our development team just checked the files and it seems it crashes in your NVidia Graphics driver:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nv_dispi.inf_amd64_a24f5f4b6b8a2b86\nvoglv64.dll
in the function vk_icdNegotiateLoaderICDInterfaceVersion()

You can try updating your NVidia driver.
If it doesn't help, please disable NanoPixel in Rebelle via Visual Settings panel (open via the main menu > Window).

I will be trying to figure this out (how to report) in the next few days as my Rebelle has crashed on me twice in the last two days. Just updated to the latest version, 6.2.2.
Running Windows 10
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7400 CPU @ 3.00GHz 3.00 GHz
Installed RAM 8.00 GB
Device ID AB473056-11A1-4961-BC59-2CF554C803E7
Product ID 00325-80930-91014-AAOEM
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch Pen support
Edition Windows 10 Home
Version 22H2
Installed on 11/25/2020
OS build 19045.3570
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19052.1000.0
Tried creating an 8" x 8" x 400ppi painting, right in the middle of painting with the watercolor fan brush, it closed. Yesterday I was doing the same thing, with a different brush, same painting, it stopped. Then I couldn't get my pen to respond so I closed it down and used Services to restart my Wacom tablet driver. Every single time I try to close anything I'm working on, I get the message 'not responding' which it has done for a long time. It will eventually close, but takes a long time.
So, I'll first check my video driver and make sure it's up to date. Then try to figure out how to use the crash analyzer. If anyone has any suggestions of what I should try, or anything, I'd appreciate it!
Thank you,
Cherie

I just updated my Rebelle 6 pro to the newest version. Any time I try to use the mixcolour picker, the fans on my PC go off and the app crashes immediately, with the crash report window opening like 50 times. Normal colour picker works fine.
This happens on any size of canvas.
