[SOLVED IN R.5.0.6] Rebelle 5 - Poor performance
Username: vrerebelle
Post Date: 2021-12-16 14:47:29
Just got Rebelle 5 pro version and really love the new pigment mixing. The problem is that it lags quite noticeble when painting and blending, even with pigment mixer and nanopixel turned off. Not sure if there is some other setting that can get it to be smoother.
My system should be well above minum specs: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16 Core, Nvidia RTX 3080 10GB, 64gb RAM, Win 10

I have also noticed a lower performance with the brushes in the 5 standard version compared to the previous 4.1.2. Just a little bit laggy.

Sad ditto on the glitches. Love that you tried to get this out before X-mas but it needs a few more days on the test bench. I'm running on an Intel I9 12th Gen with 96 GB RAM and the lag on all tools, even the pencil, is unacceptable. I can't easily adjust the settings using the stylus. It would also be great if Rebelle 5 read from the Rebelle 4 preferences file, as none of my workspace customization or brushes came over automatically in the upgrade.
Again, love the product and can't wait to try it out, but I'll be using R4 until the patch comes out for this one.

OK, so the Nano Pixel feature seems to be the culprit, and it's enabled by default, which is a bit of a problem. THE SETTING FOR THIS IS IN THE VISUAL SETTINGS WINDOW (F12 key or through the Window menu), NOT IN EDIT/PREFERENCES! With this unchecked, performance seems to improve dramatically, at least as far as I've tried it on a single layer. I'm still encountering some weird issues that I'm sure will get fixed in 5.0.1 but nothing that renders the product useless.

Rebelle 5 Pro is very laggy (NanoPixel disabled) on Mac with intel Core i9, 64gb ram, Radeon RX 5700 XT.
Brush strokes are so delayed that it is practicaly unusable now.
Rebelle 4 - A1 canvas - everything is smooth and snappy.

I have the same experience of instability and bugs in Rebelle 5 pro. I'm using an M1 Mac. Nano pixel only occasionally works. I get flashes, disappearing and reappearing strokes, sometimes I can't make a stroke etc. Even if I wanted to use it only for exporting it seems pretty broken right now. I can open an image and activate nano pixel and it just becomes a black canvas. Exporting also produces just a black canvas.
I've also noticed that keyboard shortcuts occasionally just stop working and the program needs to be restarted to get them functioning again. I've also had a few crashes.
I've uninstalled, reinstalled, restarted computer, undated drivers etc, etc.
I hope these things get sorted out because right now it doesn't seem like this was ready for release. If this was a beta it would be expected but at the moment- at least on an M1- key new features like nanopixel are essentially unusable and it's just far too buggy to really work in.

Tried the 5 Pro Trial. Its pretty unusable on my Rig.
R4 ran fine but 5 is impossible to use. Turned Nanopixel off, which helped, but its still broken. Wanted to buy an M1 mini for it, but in this state it wouldn't even run fluidly on it. Needs to be fixed soon.

Thank you upcoming fix and the good work you did for rebelle 5. I have to say with that Rebelle V 5.0.2 and Radeon RX 580 8 go, 1900 x1200 pixel screen, Nano Pixel painting is very slow on Mac under Catalina.
Didn't noticed that with the tryout (before update), but it could be the brushes used.
Radeon Rx 580 ins't recent, but is from what i read on par with the best Nvidia GPU Rebelel 5 is asking for ultra HD.
Sames brushes : usable with the CPU (Nanopixel unchecked).

So I've been experimenting this morning and wonder if other users have found the same issue with lag I have.
In Rebelle 5, if I pause for a nanosecond when the pen comes to contact with the tablet (I use a Wacom Cintiq 16) and then move quickly there is no lag however fast I move the pen. The line stays with it. But, if I employ a more natural drawing style where the pen is lifting up and down as I sketch the lag is so bad it's unsuable for all tools, pencil, oil, watercolour, etc.
It's almost as if it is taking time to register that contact with the tablet has been made.
The temptation with this issue would be to say it is a tablet problem and not a software issue, but, this doesn't happen in Rebelle 4.
In Rebelle 4 I can sketch away as fast as I wish and there is no lag.
So please, a fix quickly please since at the moment I've paid for something that isn't fit for purpose.

Just popping by to report that I'm having the same lag problems with my good old i7 7th generation processor and my gtx 1050i gpu on windows 10. However, I also derive a strange pleasure from the peculiar behavior of rebelle 5: executing fast strokes with a large brush and watching the lines build up in bullet time or very slow slow motion creates a kind of zen-like trance that I find strangely calming and exciting. I hope that your fabulous team will soon get the problems under control, but until then I'm very much enjoying this unintentionally experimental way of working :-) keep on going, your work is highly appreciated from my wait :-)

Lagging persists in 5.03. View here:
i5-8500, 16 GB RAM, Windows 10 21H2,
NanoPixel and Pigments switched off.
After all, it's entertaining that I can paint first and then change color. The strokes then appear with a time delay and change color ;-)
Okay, some black humor, but I'm trying to see something positive somewhere.

Hi there was going to write about the lag issue but there seems to be already a post. As many pointed out Rebelle 5 feels significantly more laggy even with nano and mixing turned off (to be fair I barely see any difference with on or off which I guess is ... good?).
The brush are different so it is hard to compare but running on an GTX 970 and an i9 10900K with 32gb of ram :
- In R4 the express oils are instant at max size, incredibly responsive, as they should.
-But in R5 even express oils are just so laggy at max size, I understand from the normal oils, but these are designed to be fast and yet...
-Watercolors seems more in line with R4, maybe slower, but nothing as massive as the oils.

and upon opening it acts like everything will be fine but then eventually Rebelle 5 just becomes unusable :(
Certain brushes wont even work....pastels only one of them works....none of the knives work.
Eventually it starts lagging again. So back to Rebelle 4 :(

So, I do not know if it is because of 5.0.3 update, or because of my windows update, but I no longer see jagged brush strokes. They appear smooth like they did in rebelle 4 now. Brush still lags behind a little, especially when it's a big canvas & brush, but it feels smooth like it used to. I'm happy to announce I probably don't need to keep going back to rebelle 4 now.

Just to back up Easedale's observation: the problem for me also seems to be the initial registering of the pen contact - after that delayed initial touch, the strokes are smooth and responsive.

I did some more tests today on rebelle 5.0.3.
Globally, the situation seems even worse. I have major performance issues now with the watercolors, some strokes are not registered at, the delay / input lag during quick strikes is still there and maybe even more, and as soon as there is some water and paint on the sheet, the CPU spikes to more than 90% during the "paint spread calculation" process. With or without pigments, and with nanopixels off, with or without granulation, no difference.
Drying the layer instantly drops the CPU usage.
Comparing with rebelle 4, same exact setup and same strokes, R4 never used more than 50% of the CPU during the same phase, and mostly below 30% CPU usage.
During that process the GPU is barely used.
Turning nanopixels on and doing the same tests does no real difference.
I really feel like rebelle 5.0.3 is a performance downgrade to the already problematic situation, to the point were it's really neither enjoyable, no actually usable.

Testing Rebelle 5.0.4 : the brush lag / not registered bug is indeed fixed, thanks a lot, that is a huge imprivement and it seems usable now.
Yet I think that there is still something fishy with the liquid/pigments watercolor physical simulation. With of without nanopixels, as soon as there quite some water and pigment on the canvas, Rebelle starts choking the CPU abd the simulation runs very slowly. This was absolutely not the case in Rebelle 4 and doesn't feel normal / smooth.
Specs here : 3.5Ghz Intel i5, 16Go of RAM, Nvidia RTX 2070 graphic card.

Not quite. Oil brushes react quite well with nano on. However pencils and watercolors still lag quite a bit. In some cases the watercolor will simply stop reacting at all for a second or two and then catch up with all the strokes at once. Turning nano off solves the problem. Having Nano on also makes certain menu sliders less responsive (size, opacity, water controls on brushes for example).

Thanks for the update, it's 90% there. Overall it still feels just a tad sluggish, and some tools - reed pen, I'm looking at you - are very laggy indeed. Nanopixel on/off makes a difference, but not as much as you'd expect. I'm tempted to leave it on because it's so much fun. I'd say the upgrade is worth it for the granulation alone. Hi @heatdeathdesign,
thank you for your feedback.
I am sorry you are experiencing these issues with Rebelle. May I ask what resolution is set when you experience a lag?
Please try to close other applications that are running in the background, restart the system and run Rebelle.
Do you experience these issues with the default resolution (29.7 x 21 cm, 200 DPI) ?
You mention that Rebelle 5.0.4 lags too much with watercolor and pencil brushes. Other tools work as expected or do you experience lag also with oils, inks,...?
Can you send us a video of how the brushes lag - please test with the default resolution and a default brush preset (make sure to click the Reset Brush Changes button before testing each brush). You can share the video via any free sharing service (Wetransfer,...) to our email address

Hi Folks
Just my two penneth...
I've been having real problems with Rebelle 6 and lag too...to the point whereby Rebelle was more-or-less unusable.
So this was a long shot that worked for me and may work for others...
Wait for it...(drum roll please)...
I hardwired my tablet (Huion WH1409) and everything seems smooth and as intended. TaDa! (who woulda thunk it!?)
Not the ideal solution of course, as a wireless tablet should be wireless, but this seemed to be my problem and not necessarily one
with Rebelle...although I cannot know that for certain.
But this is definitely the lesser of two evils as now I can actually use the software.
Although of course (fingers crossed), I will continue to work through all the tools and layers etc.
Regards
Chris
