[SOLVED] are Rebelle Papers not simple .PNG?

I had bought paper pack for Rebelle 3 (cold pressed), and after that i tried to import edited photo of my own paper. And what i discovered: looks like rebelle papers are not just .png files - first of all they are pretty big for 256x256 .png file. But also when you import them - they automatically understand what this texture file support deckled edges, and what is even more important - it looks like this "official" paper textures tile more seamless, than if you would import yourown texture file - Rebelle doesnt simply repeat same texture from this files as it do for regular imported .png files - for "official" textures program makes little alteration of texture so paper grain looks little different than just repeat of same pattern. Can some from EM describe what is going on with this paper textures? - i wasted a lot of time trying to understand what is going on, please explain how it works.

I'm not with EM, but I can answer part of your question. The PNG image format allows "ancillary chunks" -- which is basically metadata. See here for more info on that: https://www.w3.org/TR/PNG/#11textinfo The PNG's created by Rebelle for things like brushes contain this metadata and allow for the ability for the image to carry the brush settings, as well as alot of other information. It's a really clever use of the technology... though I have run afoul of some websites "optimizing" the PNG's when uploaded (by stripping out the metadata), thereby ruining the brush.

As Jason mentioned, Rebelle paper is a PNG file, where the paper texture is encoded in the chunks. The file contains more information about a paper and its deckled edges, it's not just an image file. But if you create a large PNG image file with a seamless texture it should work nicely as well. It depends of course how well you make the tiling of the texture.

yeah, after some experimets, i came to same conclusion: everything with more than 2 repetitions starts to look like obvious tiling of paper grain patterns, so for custom papers its best to have 1 huge texture in size of whole sheet.
OMG. Thank you so much for this, Jason - this mystery was driving me nuts! I suppose it should have been obvious, but I foolishly believed that Windows 10 would reveal this in the details. I found an online chunk inspector that helped illuminate things a lot more for me. https://www.nayuki.io/page/png-file-chunk-inspector For example, here is a copy of "flat oily" from EM and then sent through the above and then pretty-printed.

Obviously this is the "secret sauce" and subject to change with future Revelle versions, but it at least gives folks (like me) who are curious some bits to chew on. So, is there any way to create ones own deckled edges and embed this into a png?
