Layer mask question

I have been having a very hard time getting layer masks to work as expected - I think this is my problem, not the software, but here's the issue.I have my painting on its own layer. I right click to create the layer mask. When I select the layer mask to paint in black or white to create/adjust the mask, I get a "locked" icon on the canvas and can't lay down any tone with any brush, and obviously can't do anything with the mask. Sometimes when I add another layer, on top of the mask, it automatically selects all visible pixels on the layer underneath. Recently when experimenting with this, Rebelle 6.06 crashed when trying to undo multiple steps. I've watched several of the training videos and cannot duplicate the steps they are using to easily create and edit the masks. Can you document this feature better somewhere?

Quick further note: the only tool I can use on the layer mask is the erase tool. That does allow for some masking function, but I'm still not getting it to work as shown in the demos.

To paint in your Layer Mask, simply hit key "1" with a brush tool selected. Now paint with values from black to white to achieve the desired transparency. You can also use the spray bottle for smooth transition of blended parts...

You're not alone @robsalk. I think it's a bit unfortunate that Rebelle doesn't simply switch to a valid paint mode when a mask is selected. It's really easy to miss what's happening there.

This should work with all paint modes. Right now it works only with the Paint mode (shortcut "1"). We're currently solving this for future updates.

You've saved my day, Veronika!

@Veronika - does that mean we will be able to use the fill tool for layer masks in the next version? Although I solved the immediate problem that started this thread, I still can't do that, and it would be extremely handy for masking off entire sections based on a flats layer. Perhaps there is another way to do this currently?

Hello, 6.0.9 update has been released and you can now use all paint modes on the layer masks (Paint, Paint & Mix, Paint & Blend, Blend and Erase). @robsalk - The Fill tool is now disabled for the layer masks but we will implement this for the future. Right now there is no workaround, you need to paint over the whole layer mask manually.
