What are structures?

I have to be honest - I don't understand what structures are supposed to be. At one point in the beta, they allowed you to make a fantastic 3D (2.5D) textured, impasto surface before you started painting. And brushes would interact with the height of them so realistically. They could support multiple structures, including transparent PNG files, and made amazing starting textures. I was SO excited about this ... The structure appears sort of on top of the raw canvas, until you fill a layer when it disappears, but it is still there to affect the stroke, even though it isn't part of the surface. As I said - like a brass rubbing. Please could we at least have the option to create the 3D texture version that existed in the Beta?

Testing this further - I used a structure on the left. On the right I imported the raw straucture image as a layer, flipped it horizontally, used black to transparent filter and then used the layer as a masking fluid layer (set to invisible). The result is almost identical behaviour - without the wierd white overlay effect. This is also a "BRASS RUBBING" effect - there is nothing on the canvas surface to explain why a mark would look like this. Given that we can already do this with one or even multiple masking fluid layers, surely structures should actually be structural on the surface?

Hi Pete - "I don't understand how this is any different to a grayscale mask..." I too was asking that myself. It seems to act a bit like a "local" canvas texture, but isn't by far what I envisioned when I saw the announcement. > "Please could we at least have the option to create the 3D texture version that existed in the Beta?" Although I don't know the beta, what you describe seems to be more what I was hoping for and what got me very excited about this release in the first place. So yeah, a BIG +1 from me!

Definitely not seeing what the structure feature is supposed to be doing. I've also noticed that while they seem to sort of do SOMETHING but if you turn off the structure visibility, any effect on the layer is immediately lost. So is it just a weird multiply layer? I definitely feel like I am missing something (if it's a functional feature)...

Hi Pete, The paint is flat because you use a flat brush without any impasto. Try to paint with a thicker brush (more impasto), and it should work the same way as in beta. There were no changes from beta according to the behavior of Structures, except you can't use more of them simultaneously, but the interface for that was a mess, we had to clean that up. We are working on optimization for Structures, so the work with them will be faster (you have not to wait to show/hide the structure) and with better UI. It means that you just show the structure and you can immediately paint over it, have not to confirm it before painting.

Are structures height maps?

Yes, you paint primary over the lighter parts of the imported textures.

Can I create my own strucure? Can I use a height map from Houdini?

Hi, I'm having the same issue. I AM painting with an Impasto brush (I'm sure Pete is as well) and the structure is having absolutely no effect. I don't understand how to make it do the things that Justice is shown doing in this video: Thanks, -Eric

Very sad that this has been marked as solved. Structures (i.e. Brass rubbing) are such a missed opportunity (for anyone that likes real impasto texture)

Yeah... agreed. Hey!! Come on guys... this is NOT SOLVED. It's not even working the way it was advertised in the YouTube vid that I posted!!

Umm... let's keep it real, guys. While I agree that there's quite a bit of room for improvement... @posefile: "It's not even working the way it was advertised in the YouTube vid that I posted!!" ... what exactly isn't working like in that video? It depends much on the structures used as well as on brush and visual settings - oh, and technique of course. On his own channel Tablet Pro, Justice has some videos where he goes into more detail - check them out. I'm sure that there will be more in-depth tutorials about structures on EM channel as well in the future.

How do I create structure maps I can use in Rebelle 7?

Structures are grayscale .png files, just import png file to Structures window. Pete, structures behave the same way as in beta version, same as in youtube videos, there should be no difference, even according to impasto behavior. With the same brush you should have the same experience as in beta version. Only difference is that at this moment you can use only one texture, UI was not practical for more textures, even now it is clunky. We are working on a new UI, which allows more structures.

I also having problems with sturctures. I add a structure to canvas, paint over it and the structure shows up nicely, but one I hide the structure or add anything else, another structure, or set the structure, the 1st structure turns into a blob of paint and the structure is gone. I've tried using different brushes, canvas, watercolor brushes, so many different things, to which no avail any structures actually work. Hope you can get this fixed soon. I enjoy Rebelle 7.0.7 except when you can't use different features. :(

Show/Hide structure not working as intended. Please add an opacity button. Let us make the structure invisible please.
