Could we have a button added to the Brush Group menu bar, for each section of the default brushes, that would display a sample of what the brushes look like?
I believe Justice would be willing to create these images for Escape's use. Having the names of the brushes displayed below their respective samples would greatly aid in visualizing the end result, rather than relying on memory for our favorite brushes.
I took a screenshot of a painted canvas and added the text using the Markup Tool on my Mac OS.
These are the new Oil, 7.1 brushes:

If a button cannot be added to the window top, add it to the right drop down of the window top?

Well, this may be a good idea for the included brushes, but (if I'm understanding correctly) wouldn't help when it comes to custom brushes. The ultimate solution would of course be if we could make custom thumbnails. This is possible in Flame Painter, so they should know how to implement this.
Personally I like the way it's handled in Krita: when saving a new (or modified) brush preset, you can simply paint anything on a scratchpad (or even put part of the canvas content in there). This thumbnail is displayed magnified while hovering in the brushes panel. But then again, Krita also has tagging, search function and brush history...

Certainly, it's true that this feature currently wouldn't support custom brushes or favorites. However, my perspective is that if you've taken the effort to craft a custom brush or fine-tune a favorite to suit your needs, you likely comprehend its capabilities quite well.
Yesterday, I arranged an additional monitor beside my workspace solely to keep my brushes image handy for reference while painting. This proved incredibly beneficial throughout the process. Of course, not everyone has the luxury of affording a second monitor...
An alternative idea for custom/favorite brushes could involve incorporating a button where users could specify the path and filename of an image they've created, which would then be displayed in a pop-up window. Preferences or settings could retain this file path and name for the image to appear in the favorites window.
It would be helpful if Justice created a tutorial video demonstrating how to produce such images for both Mac and Windows users. While it was a straightforward task for me, not everyone might grasp the process. On Mac, for instance, I utilized Photos and the Markup tool to label the brush names using text boxes. It took about fifteen minutes to create the screen print and label the brushes.

Yes!! Literally came here to say this. ArtRage also has it for custom brushes; you can paint whatever swatch you want and the brush creator will allow you to sample a small square of the canvas to generate a "brush icon" before finalizing it.

(continued from previous post...) It also really helps that the sampled icons are in color.

Magic Squire, which is a brush management plugin for Photoshop, has a feature where it creates a sample stroke from your brushes automatically. Escape Motions team might want to check it out for some ideas on how to implement this feature with as much automation as possible, especially if we want to create sample strokes as brush preset thumbnails for a large library of existing brushes.

I prefer the solution from LunatiqueRob. Have the software auto-generate the brush stroke sample. And make that an option to display instead of the brush tip.

Rebelle actually does generate this stroke preview in the brush creator. It just needs to be sized down to thumbnail size.
Here is how CSP does it.

There is an auto-generated stroke on the left, and the name on the right. If you resize your brush panel the name starts to overlap. I'd like something like this but the stroke doesn't need to be as long, and the name can be underneath, as Rebelle currently does.

Another thing about the thumbnails that I've noticed is that some brushes display an icon in the top right that shows the paint option. How do I turn this on/off? As you can see, these knife brushes don't have the icon, but the metallic brushes do. I'd like to be able to use those icons for my oil brushes, and not for my express brushes to help me visually distinguish them, but I don't know how.
