Bad performance issues - slow choppy brush movement on Apple Mac / OSX

Hello again, I have mentioned my performance issue on facebook/messenger chat in September 2019. Back then I have tried the DEMO version. Sorry to say that, but it ran awful and very slow on my new iMac. (2017 model, 3,5 GHz Intel Core i5, Radeon Pro 575 4gb graphics card!) The entire app performance and especially the cursor movement is very slow and choppy. It looks like I am switching to a 20year old computer with pulled handbrake. I saw it with mouse or tablet. I have a Wacom tablet, and I also tested a new XPPen Deco Pro. Input device and drivers were not to blame. The document is the default DIN A4 in 200dpi. Conclusion: The software is unusable. Back then I was told by "Andrea" to try out the older 3.1 version. In deed, the older version ran slightly better. Smoother but still very unsatisfying. 6 month later, I finally bought a personal license through the Humble Bundle Website. Great opportunity for my personal and rare usage. Again, I did many tests including different MacOSX and latest Rebelle Versions. The previously mentioned performance issue is still there. The program is actually unusable. Only the older 3.1 demo makes a difference... but it is also very bad. Far from a responsive and smooth experience. Please, can you check and fix it as soon as possible!? Thanks in advance.

Sounds to memory problems...

@h8l2 Thanks for your thoughts. I have also tested with very low screen resolutions. The App/Cursor performance is ALWAYS slow and choppy. No matter which document size/resolution I choose. Not to mention, the noticable better 3.1 DEMO performance. So, my conclusion is still a global programming/optimization issue. Since the actual and heavy simulation starts AFTER a brush stroke... I definitely would expect a fast and smooth reponse during the movement. Frankly speaking, I am pretty disappointed.

I'm having the same issues as the TS. I'm using v3.2.0 on a MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018), 2,2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM), but the performance is so sluggish that's it's impossible to work with. Even when I only open Rebelle without doing anything the process is using between 92-94% of the CPU (It's a 6-cores CPU with HT, so can go up to 1200%). The canvas settings, i.e. Default A4 or HD 720, don't make much of a difference. On my Windows PC (Old i7 2700k) Rebbel v3.2.0 runs perfectly fine. If there's anything I can try to help figuring out why it's running so slow, I'm happy to help.

Hi @wesleydaniel, it would be really helpful if you could record a video of your issue. Please make sure the brushes you use are default ones and please test with the default resolution. You can send the video to support [at] escapemotions.com via Wetransfer. Thank you very much!

Hello. Like people on this forum, I am suffering from a pen delay on my iMac. It's an Intel Core i5, 3.1 GHz, 16 GB RAM, and I'm not running any other software. I have no problems with Photoshop, clip studio, krita, etc. and no delays. Is there a way to make it lighter in Rebelle's settings? Also, I'd like to try Rebelle 3.1, which others have said is a bit light. Is there an address where I can download it? If you can let me know, that would be very helpful. But I really like this software, including the paper/ink relationship. If only there was no delay, it would be great. I hope the software will continue to be developed and become even better.

Hi @swanlake, thank you for posting to our Forum! Please download the 3.1 version from your account - go to the top right corner where your email address is, select "My pofile" from the drop-down menu, then click the "Purchases" tab. Is version 3.1 working better for you than version 3.2.1? Looking forward to your feedback.

Hi, Just updated to 3.2.1 and the brush/pen lag is worse. I run Rebelle on an iMac 2019 27" 5K, 40GB RAM, Core i9 @ 3.6 GHz, Radeon Pro 580X 8 GB. Should be horsepower enough, no? ;-) Drawing squiggle loops with the ink pen or the pencil is a joke - they're not smooth ovals but polygons, for goodness sake! Comparison with the same basic exercise using Photoshop CC and Krita on the same system exposes Rebelle's glaring deficiency - PS and Krita brushes have no discernible lag, permit quick, impulsive brushstrokes and the resulting ovals are s-m-o-o-t-h. Rebelle needs a fundamental rethink in this area, IMO. It seem I have to post my comparisons picture separately… Kind regards, Joachim

Hi Guys, I can confirm very similar severe lag problems here too. I've found any version 3.2x software is unusable due to this problem. A simple test is to take any pencil tool with default settings, default document, and make 10 quick strokes on your paper. Lag is so pronounced that around 7 out of the 10 won't even be registered on the screen, and my Mac's definitely not slow! I've run some tests this morning, and find installing 3.1 seems to solve the issue, or at least my (fast) processor can cope well enough to make things a lot better. Like many I love the concept of Rebelle 3 but it's unusable for me at present. ArtRage, Photoshop (in fact anything else) runs just fine. macOS 10.15.5 Catalina, iMac Pro (2017), 3Ghz 10-Core Intel Zeon W, 128GB DDR4, Radeon Pro Vega 64 16GB, Wacom Intuos 4

Hi! I also can confirm this On Windows 10, i7 7700k, 1080ti, 32GB, 120hz 4k monitor Very laggy canvas viewport brush movement in 3.2. Switched to 3.1 and is smoother (feels like 60hz). What I mean by 'canvas viewport' is any area within the light gray canvas window, the center window, that is between the left and right side panels. If I switch to a tool other than a brush or eraser, like transform or something, mousing over the canvas viewport is fast. But if I switch to any brush, simply mousing over the canvas viewport is very laggy (feels like 10-20hz refresh rate). On 3.2 if I expand the left and right side panels a large amount and leave the center canvas viewport to be a lot smaller, it becomes less laggy, but this is not usable.

Hi @spitfire31, thanks for the screenshots. Could you please try to resize the Rebelle's window to, let's say to 1/4 of the size of the monitor and try to reproduce the issue. Is the lag the same as it is when Rebelle is in full-screen mode (5k)? Could you please send us a video of the issue?

I like Rebelle very much, but unfortunately he presents this slowness most of the time here for me. And of all the programs I use, this is the only one to present this. Which, despite the fact that I paid for the full version of it and I was so excited because it really worked ok here, it would be perfect for me. Often because of these programs having stopped using the program. The problem happens mainly when I am doing something that requires many layers or that I have to enlarge on the canvas. On Mac with 8GB of memory and i5 dual core or on windows. Use in both several other editing programs, such as those of adobe and other companies without any problem of blocking or slowing down. I really suggest that the company review this. The program cannot be so heavy as to cause such problems. Because these problems make their use unviable. Review this urgently as it is reported to be quite old and has not been revised, improved or much less resolved until the mentions in the versions.

Hi @janinepgm, thanks for your post. The issues you are experiencing are probably connected to Rebelle being a compute-intensive software, due to the simulation of fluid flow, especially when artists work on larger canvases with a lot of layers. We are currently optimizing the code so that working in Rebelle is more lag-free.

I bought Rebelle 2 days ago, installed the version 3.2.1 and it works very slow on my Mac (Mojave) . Someone reported 3.1 to be better because it's lighter. I'd like to downgrade my version too, but what should I choose among the various 3.1 versions? Thanks!

Hi Veronika, The Rebelle window size on my 27" 5K screen certainly has a decisive effect on the lag problem. The upper squiggle is made on an A4 paper at 100% in a full screen window (27" 5K iMac 2019, 72GB RAM, 3,6 GHz Intel Core i9, Radeon Pro 580X 8 GB). The lower squiggle is made on the same paper at 100% but with the Rebelle window at about 1/ screen size, as per your request. So, it's obvious that the screen area used has a crucial influence. Now, one of the reasons that I got a 27" high resolution screen with a respectable graphics card was because of PS 2020 and programs like Rebelle. I hope that you can figure out some radical optimisation that will allow me to use the full screen size instead of having to shrink it to a virtual 13" screen. ;-) Kind regards, Joachim

Hello again, I am "glad" to see some users that can confirm my initial experiences on the MAC ! Do you have any MAC system at EscapeMotions studios? I have a feeling that the issues are related to the graphics card drivers and dependent system components. Since the previous comments and users even have a lot of RAM... it must be something in the graphics accelleration or general app performance. Nothing has changed for me, it is actually unusable. (sorry, I had no more free time to spend on this issue. It's not my daily business at the moment) I guess, you should test the app on one or two different MAC machines (not necessarily a MAC PRO ;) :D ) Maybe an intro iMac and Macbook Pro should be a good real world testing platform.

Hi Veronika et alii! I'm very happy to report that on my iMac 2019, 27", 5K machine running Mojave 10.14.6, Rebelle update 3.2.5 has completely solved my previous problems with slow and jagged brush movements. Now, it is smoth as a… well, you know. Excellent work by the developpers! Now I can start using Rebelle properly. Kind regards, Joachim

Hi, I have the same problem with the las Rebelle 7 version. On iMac 2020 27" 64Gb of RAM. If I reduce the size of the Rebelle window (kinf of 1920x1080), the curves are smooth. But if I enlarge the rebelle window in full screen (2560x1440) the same problem as pepperstreet appear... lag and polygonal round shape ?
