With the launch of Rebelle 8, we’re excited to unveil a new and more flexible approach to licensing: the 1-Year Free Updates. We believe it is a better, fairer way to keep Rebelle growing with you while keeping you informed about what's next.
In the past, we typically released a major new version once a year, offering existing users a 50% upgrade discount. While that model worked for a time, it came with a few challenges, both for us and for you, our users:
- First, we often had to delay releasing exciting new features, saving them up for the next big version instead of sharing them when they were ready.
- Second, many potential new users felt uncertain about when the right time to buy was, fearing a major update might be just around the corner.
This led us to rethink how we deliver value, and with that, we’re happy to introduce what we believe is a more transparent and user-friendly system.
What are '1-Year Free Updates'?
Starting from Rebelle 8, with 1-Year Free Updates you’ll receive all new features, improvements, and fixes for a full 12 months from the day you purchase your Rebelle license. And here’s the best part: your license is still perpetual. That means:
- You own Rebelle forever, no subscriptions.
- You can continue using the version you own even after your update period ends.
- You can renew your update access at any time to get another year of updates.
Why This Is a Win for Artists?
With this new model, we’re no longer tied to once-a-year upgrade cycles. No more waiting for major versions. We believe this creates a more transparent, fair, and dynamic way for us to keep delivering the tools you love, right when they're ready.
We can release new features the moment they’re developed and tested, giving you faster access to the tools you need. No more guessing, just continuous innovation and improvements that flow directly to your canvas.
Moreover, we can give exciting sneak peeks of what’s coming way before the release. This means we do not have to keep secrets from you, and you will see into our "development kitchen" with total transparency.
What Are the Benefits of '1-Year Free Updates'?
✅ You will get the latest features without delay
✅ You will know exactly what you're getting when you purchase
✅ You will stay current with ongoing enhancements
✅ You can enjoy a more transparent, fair upgrade path
✅ Your license is still perpetual
✅ No subscriptions! Your license is yours to keep
Even though Rebelle 8 comes with more than 40 new features and improvements, we’ve already got more - a packed roadmap filled with creative and long-awaited tools. With the new licensing model, we’re freer to release them as soon as they’re ready. This makes Rebelle more responsive to your needs.
'The 1-Year FREE updates' model is about keeping your tools fresh, relevant, and future-ready, without compromising ownership. We believe it’s a more flexible, fair, and dynamic way to grow with you, our amazing community of artists. We’re excited for what this change enables and deeply grateful for your continued support.

Just bought Rebelle 8 Pro Update. When the 1 year free upgrade period is over, how much will cost to have another year of free updates?
This is a very bad idea - I get you can keep the product but this model will force all users to subscribe in order to enjoy your best and remain on the current version.
Also - it removed the pressure on your company to release a new version with significant improvements - since you don't need to, your users are committed to have to keep up-to-date with their payments or face paying full price because its no longer a discounted renewall.
This kind of model is exactly why Adobe's suite has stagnated, become bloated and self serving focusing on ways to monetise rather than providing a quality product.
Your existing model was the best - since it encourages innovation and keeps your product fresh and represents the best value to customers.
Despite your promices about making it possible to release early etc - the simple fact is that your not incentivised to release a next version at all - 8 could be the last, or maybe 3 years down the line 9 might come out - but with releasing more updates more regularly there will be no contrast on the "new" version and the perception of innovating and improving your procduct and appearing fresh to your customers will be lost.
All of this while those that hang on will be stuck "not-subscribing/subscribing" on the hope of getting a cheaper disappointing upgrade when it finally lands...
I think this is a mistake and your missing the point of what attracted me to your product in the first place - regardless of the perpetual licence.
I would have snapped up the upgrade but this model is a roadblock for me.
Ultimately I use this product more causally so its not essential for my workflow - Affinity are my go to tools presently - I'm sure there are many others that will be turned off by this model and you may be overestimating how much your broader base wants to commit to regular payments.
I understand your concerns. If we don't make features you like, you have not to upgrade and just use the version you have. In a subscription model, if the software stops evolving but you still want to use it, you’re required to keep paying , and that’s a big difference.
Previously, you paid for the features when upgrading to a new version. If the update didn’t offer anything interesting to you (and that can happen with Rebelle 8 as well), you could just skip it. After the release of the major version there were no more updates for the older version.
For us, the new model means we can deliver features as soon as they’re developed, resulting in fewer bugs and better communication of improvements to the community.
We expect to release major features roughly once every one - two years, as they require extensive time and research to develop, like Bristle Brushes, RealShader, or SoftShadows. These took around 1,5 - 2 years to create (Bristle Brushes are still in intensive development) and must be completed before release. In the old model, minor features had to wait until major features were ready. With the new model we can release minor features when they are tested and ready.
Plus, we would like to release more features within Rebele 8, what was not possible so much with the previous model (minor versions were mostly about bugfixing with some additional features). The version number itself isn’t the most important, what matters more are the new features we deliver.
We will see as well how these incremental updates will work, but we genuinely believe this will be a better model overall.
will this 1-Year Free Updates start after the full release of Rebelle 8 or now during the early access?
1-Year Free Updates starts after the full release, this Early Access time is a bonus to try new features.

From Escape motions:
Yes. However, it is not probable that a major bug would be discovered and fixed later than a year after the release of Rebelle 8.
Conclusion:
No bugfixes after that 1- year.
There will be bugfixes after one year but hopefully just minor ones.
In my opinion, the ability to maintain the permanent version even if you stop upgrading is a sign of the developer's commitment.
because if attractive updates are not provided or trust is lost, the developer will bear that risk.
However, regarding bug fixes, it would provide reassurance if a policy similar to that adopted by Celsys for Clip Studio Paint were in place, such as offering bug fixes to owners of version 1.x until version 3.0 is released. how about providing a one-year warranty period(for bug fix) after the expiration date and addressing critical issues even after that period.
In the EU, software providers are legally required to deliver updates under certain conditions. This obligation is part of EU Directive 2019/770, which came into effect on January 1, 2022, and has been implemented into national law. Providers must deliver functional updates to ensure the software continues to operate as described, provide security updates to protect against vulnerabilities and security risks, and offer updates at no additional cost as long as you are entitled to use the software—for example, during the license period or within the legal warranty period. If you purchased a perpetual license, the provider must supply updates for at least 2 years from the date of purchase.
We will provide bugfixes longer that 1 year, 1 year update is for features. More details will be in the next blog.
Thanks for the clarification! Feature updates are completely different from bug fixes and OS compatibility updates.
I'm disappointed about the price change (whether it's good or bad, change always meets resistance), but I'm still eagerly awaiting the new version. It's the 29th where I am, and I'm checking every day to see when I can purchase the early beta. ????
(I don't think I can wait until the Black Friday sale. ????????)
The price is reasonable, but a discount of more than 50% would be nice for those who upgrade during the first days of Rebelle 8 early bug access release.
Update price remains 50% from the full price in the future as well.
Why shouldn't anyone wait until Black Friday to upgrade? It might even be cheaper than the 50% discount from 7 Pro to 8 Pro now. By then, the worst bugs will have been fixed and you'll get free updates until the next Black Friday in 2026.
I'm surprised to see all these negative reviews, and i confess i find them hard to understand.
Rebelle will still be at the same price for those who already had the previous version (50%), full price for those who had a previous version and free update 3 months before the new version.
What is called “1 year of free updates” is that instead of having only minor updates ( 7.01, 7.02...) there will be more qualitative updates and these free updates will start in September, the day of the release of version 1.0.
I don't see any subscription (even in principle) because it's the same price as before and you get more than before.
Unless i've misunderstood something.
You are correct, you can use Rebelle after the 1-year period. This is not subscription model.
How does it work once it expires? We lose the updates from that 1 year and get back to 8.0? Or we just stop getting updates after the 1 year period (and keep the ones that appeared during the year)?
And I saw something that bug fixes will be considered as separate updates for all and the subscription is just for the new features - is that how it will work?
After one year, you can continue using the latest version (e.g. v.8.5) you have, including all features and bug fixes available at the time. You’ll also have access to all previous versions in case you ever want to revert.
Additionally, we will maintain one Long-Term Support (LTS) version for two years. This version may not include the newest features, but it will receive all critical bug fixes throughout the period.
Thank you for clarification!
Wait until your - One Year of Free Updates - is over and they release some cool new features for Rebelle 8... then you know that you won't get what you had before they introduced this model and you have to buy another year of so-called free updates to get this new features. If they take as long for Rebelle 9 to be released as they did with 8 (or even longer), then you're going to miss out eventually.
I don't think you understood what Escapemotions wrote in this blog post, everything remains the same as before, the minor updates, the price.
It's the major updates that usually come with the next version that happen during the period when the software is being perfected. Escapemotions defined this period as one year, and i think that created confusion for most people, who took it to be a disguised subscription, which it isn't.
We will get more for the same price. For all this, i say thank you, Escapemotions.
I understand your concerns Benjamin, but with the previous payment, model you paid for the main features when upgrading to the new version. So is this worse that before? If you want next features you can buy update , if not you just use Rebelle as it is.
Major features will be hopefully approximately once in a year - two, it takes a lot of time and research to develop a major feature like Bristle Brushes, RealShader or SoftShadows. These features in R8 were developed during the last 1,5 - 2 years (Bristle Brushes are still in intensive development) and they must be complete before releasing them. Other minor features cannot be released before we finish major features. With the new model we can release minor features when they are ready.
I think the pricing and thinking behind Rebelle 8, and onward, makes sense. The thing that makes it stand out, is that if a user chooses to stop paying, they still have the program to use at the point they stepped off. People speak of Adobe. I used CC for more years than I can remember have paid thousands over the years. When I retired and didn't think I could continue the outlay, the only thing I had left was a real hate for them as a company. If a user could have stepped of the subscription and still had access to the last version they were using at the time, that would have been ideal, and the appreciation for the company would have remained intact. Good for Escape Motions, for obviously understanding this, while attempting to keep their income flowing.
I too am finding it hard to wait for the early release. ????
