We are very excited and grateful to announce that Rebelle 2 is released today and integrates groundbreaking improvements including stencils, masking tools, PSD support, a new brush system and more. The time has come to deliver this new version of the revolutionary paint software from the hands of the developers and beta testers to you, our dear artists, to create breathtaking artwork.

Rebelle 2 brings extraordinary improvements, watercolor and acrylic brushes got an unprecedented realistic look and together with watercolor masking tools give an exceptional traditional feel to the digital painting. A completely new brush engine allows users to create custom brushes - round, flat, bamboo, various wet splatters, sponges and many others. New stencils and selection tools together with wet paint diffusion open new creative results yet not possible to achieve in digital art. This new supercharged version comes with full multi-touch support and layered PSD support. All these convenient features are wrapped in an agreeable and easy to use interface with a tiny learning curve.

The Key Features of Rebelle 2
• New brush engine - Newly implemented brush engine allows users to create unlimited brush variations. Users are able to create their own custom brushes or enjoy by default implemented shapes - round, flat, bamboo, various splatters, sponges and many others. With the option to use GPU acceleration (yet experimental), brushes can have a bigger size and faster response.
• Creative Stencils and Masking Tools - Stencils in combination with watercolor diffusion opens new possibilities for budding artists. Users can mask out painting areas, wet the paper and let the watercolor simulation create its magic.
• Selection Tools - Create quick masks and define shapes that block off the areas you do not wish to change. Classic freehand, polygonal, elliptical and rectangular selections got a new meaning when used in combination with traditional wet media.
• Layered PSD Support - An implemented layered PSD import & export is compatible with Adobe Photoshop and other applications and enables to transfer works smoothly also into other 3rd party graphic applications.
• Faster Performance - Undo/redo and file management are optimized so the whole painting process including opening and saving big artworks is much more fluent.
• Multi-touch Experience - Rebelle has complete support for multitouch gestures for Wacom, Microsoft, Apple and alternative tablet and trackpad devices including Astropad application.
• User Interface - The interface is intuitive and easy to use, ideal for beginners or traditional professionals which may find that the creative process can be very fluent also in digital art. Simplicity and every important feature in reach is the first thing you find when using Rebelle.
“I am absolutely blown away by the update - I feel like this is some great dream I don’t want to wake up from! I’m raising my recommendation from being a tool you "should” buy to a tool you “MUST” buy.“ Junkyard Sam, artist and beta tester

Hi, yesterday my internet security deleted Rebelle 2.1 due to having a Trojan. It seems that the application may have vulnerabilities. I've only had the application for about 2 weeks now and upgraded to 2.1 last week.
Hi Anne, where did you download Rebelle from? If from our website, I can assure you there is nothing wrong with the software and its installation files. All files on our website are uploaded by us. So please get back to us with the closer problem description, which internet security software you use and if possible, the exact message it gave you at support [at] escapemotions.com . Thank you!
If I skip upgrading to version 2 will I have to pay full price with the next version (version 3)?
Hi Myriam, the upgrade policy for Rebelle 3 and its further upgrades is not set yet. Thank you for your understanding!
Thanks Peter. Any time frame when a version 3 might be out?
Hi Myriam, this has not been not set yet either, I am sorry.
Is there a way to control the number of undos ?
After a while is a lot of memory, just for undos!
Hi Duarte, you can set the 'max used memory' in Rebelle 2 Preferences panel.
Thanks, Peter, for the quick reply; I thought "max used memory" was for all the operations the program needed to make. So it only concerns undo memory?
Yes, Duarte.
Rebelle 2 is crashing all the time, after a few strokes; I'm in windows 10, Intel i7.16GB of ram and GeForce Gt 730, with 2 GB. Most strange is that I could work without problems just after installing it, but two or three days later it stated crashing and today it is crashing all the time. Is becaming useless!
Hi Duarte,
Please go to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Escape Motions\Rebelle 2 and delete the whole "Data" folder.
Then run Rebelle 2 again (you will need to enter your registration details).
How does it work now?
Peter
Purchased and installed Rebelle 2 and at first worked fine. Now it crashes on loading every time. Running windows 10 creative. Any suggestions, please? (Tried uninstalling and reinstalling - same problem occurs).
Hi John,
Please go to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Escape Motions\Rebelle 2 and delete the whole "Data" folder.
Then run Rebelle 2 again (you will need to enter your registration details).
How does it work now?
Peter
After following your instructions has opened three times in succession without any problem. Many thanks for your help, Peter.
Is it possible to change the painting brush cursor from circle to the actual shape of the brush selected? (Or am I missing some setup to change that cursor to actual brush shape?). Like for example if I selected the flat brush, at present the painting brush shape cursor is still circle even if I selected the flat brush. I know the present cursor shape (circle) doesnt affect the painting outcome, but its kind of nice to see that we can see the actual shape of the brush we selected on the cursor while we are painting.
Hi@disqus_OAeHNlSAmE:disqus thank you for your message. It is not yet possible in this current version but we'd like to implement it one of the future Rebelle 2 updates.
Maybe this isn't the place for this, but I have to wonder what kind of operation you're running. I ordered Rebelle 2 several days ago and have yet to receive my license key. I've sent emails to both sales and support without a single response. My last attempt was reaching out through PayPal and still nothing in response. Needless to say, I'm not a very happy camper.
Hello, we are very sorry for this issue, in the release day our servers were overwhelmed, but we are answering all emails as fast as possible.
Thanks for the reply, Peter. I can understand the situation but certainly not very happy in how it was handled. I'll sit back and continue to wait.
I absolutely understand you, I would feel the same.. Thank you very-very much for your patience!
Hello@bwccity:disqus have you received the key yet? If not, please let us know your email address you used for contacting us, we'll get back to you asap. Thanks!
Hi Peter,
Yes, I received the key through the dialog established through PayPal. Thanks for the follow up.
I'm really thrilled and excited to work with Rebelle 2. I love the watercolor effects, the app reacts fluently and smooth, I don't have any problems with the CPU.
The only problem at the moment is to import (layered) psd-files. I didn't have a single chance to import psd-files no matter how big they are because R2 crashes after a few seconds. On the other hand, I can't import files not located on my computer, like for instance from the dropbox. The export from R2 to PS works fine. I've tried it several times now but it doesn't seem to make sense at the moment. Does anyone else have this problem?
Windows 10, 64bit
Intel I7 3500k
16GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce GTX 970
Kind regards
Sandra
I made just one import test with a layered (three or four layers with different blending modes), fairly big .psd file, with no problem at all.
Mac OS 10.9.5, Intel i7, 8GB in a Macbook Air 2013.
Strange... I will try it again today but I don't actually understand what I'm doing wrong.
Perhaps system related – you're on Win, I'm on Mac…
Good luck!
Hi Sandra. I haven't tried the multi-layer PSD import yet but I have a suggestion that you might want to try. In Photoshop Settings/File Handling there's a Section called File Compatibility. At the bottom of that section there's a line to set the option to 'Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility'. Try setting it to 'Always' (or 'Ask') and opening/saving your problem PSD file again. Did it make any difference?
Hello Sandra, there is a problem with some PSDs on some operational system. It is strange, we have to fix this.
Consider adding a thin window that can be docked on the side of the tool panels (left and right) that has two sliders, like Procreate uses: One for brush size and one for opacity. Unlike Procreate it would show the values of the sliders; brush size and opacity percentage. Tablet users would use these two sliders all the time like Procreate users use on an iPad. With undo/redo arrow buttons too?
Hello Whystar, we have a plan to make something similar in one of the future versions.
Yeah, there's plenty of variety in implementing brush size/opacity controls. I'm partial to AutoDesk's Sketchbook 'puck button' that can be set to pull in all the menus from the sides and top, as well as give you x/y drag control for size/opacity.
I guess the real question is how protected are any of these other app interface innovations?
Another UI solution that I really like in tablet-only mode is the long press. It's nice because it can be assigned to any existing icon or menu item much like a key modifier, only not requiring any keys. A one second pause is hardly a big sacrifice to give such flexibility.
I am trying out the demo version and I have crashed the program three separate times now. The latest crash (not sure what the other instances were) was using the watercolor brush in normal brush mode, then painting using the clean brush mode. Win 7 pro 64, 16 GB ram. Not GPU mode.
Hello Hwystar, we are already working on this issue, should be fixed soon!
I fiddled with it for a couple of hours. GPU engine has some lags and strokes aren't smooth yet, sometimes takes 2-3 sec to see the stroke. My PC config is the following:
i5 2500k
24GB ram
MoBo Gigabyte Z68x-UD3-B3
Asus GTX 970 OC Strix
I would like to suggest to implement the amount of blending colors bar while using the dirty acrylic brush, that would be VERY useful.
A tool to clean the dirty brush, resetting the color selected.
A tool for straight lines and maybe shapes as weel.
For the rest, I am having fun like a kid.
Keep going guys! ;)
Thank you Enrico! GPU engine needs a lot of work, it is only experimental. :)
I get the program crashing unexpectedly sometimes, I use CPU engine. I think it happens when I have lots of layers and high resolution (4K); once happened with one layered canvas (2000x1500) when I fiddled with brush settings on acrylic. Rebelle 1 never crashed even under stress, Rebelle 2 is still fresh and more complex, I am sure you guys will make it super stable as 1.
GP-'Oops'!
I tried the experimental 'GPU' instead of the default 'CPU' settings in prefs, and now Reb2 won't open at all.
What's the best way to reset it back to the default? Is there a pref file to knock out or something?
It should revert automatically :) But if not, to revert back to CPU engine:
Mac OS:
Library/Application Support/Escape Motions/Rebelle 2/Data
and delete "settings.ini"
Windows:
C:\Users\"your name"\AppData\Local\Escape Motions\Rebelle 2\Data
and delete "settings.ini"
Then run Rebelle 2 again, the CPU version should start.
Thanks Peter. Actually, I did figure that one out on my own (deleting the old ini files) when I sat down at lunch to try again. (Man, sometimes lunches are not long enough for a lot of real fun.)
Peter and EM team: WOW!
Just... wow.
Even though I had a late night meeting and was only able to spend less than half an hour last night actually playing with Reb2, I am super thrilled with what I've seen so far. Alas, today is a solid 'day job' day and I won't be able to play with this incredible new product until much later.
I was going to say 'revolutionary' new product, but hey... isn't that a given with the EM Team?
Even with just a brief session I instantly got the impression that this was a whole new level of digital/natural realism you folks have nursed to life here.
I think that Microsoft should be writing you guys a commission check for this one. It's going to sell a lot of Surface Pros.
Thanks for not disappointing me -- it's definitely my favourite birthday present and so worth the wait! (And that's going up against my wife's table-sized 'beer-amid' she made for me out of a massive variety of obscure micro-brewery beer varieties! Um... please don't tell her I said yours was better.)
I will be plugging this upgrade on all the online and offline venues I wander into for some time, to be sure.
Thanks Escape Motions! (What a time to be a digital art creative!)
Hi, nice upgrade from R1 ! I wonder if you're going to add somme magic wand feature for selection ? That would be terrific for coloring comics.
Sure, it is in our to-do list!
I have created a free set of custom brushes, which hopefully can help give some additional ideas for working in the new Rebelle 2 brush engine -- anybody interested can download the brush pack here: http://jasonmaranto.blogspo...
Having dived into Rebelle 2 for just an hour, I think that calling it "just an upgrade" is a real misnomer. To me, Rebelle 2 feels like an entirely new program, using a similar GUI as Rebelle (1).
It's an amazing tour-de-force. The brushes work with speed and immediacy and the Cmd(Ctrl)-click-on-canvas shortcut for changing brush size is just SO good and together they make for a whole new experience in software painting.
Then, there's the layer compatibility with Photoshop – another game changer.
These new features are, of course, just a scratching on the surface. I think that Peter & team has performed an amazing feat and the upgrade price is, to my mind, an extremely reasonable remuneration for what must have been a huge undertaking.
Thank you so much, Peter, and never mind the obligatory whining from the odd tightwads about grace periods and upgrade price. ;-)
To still have to pay nearly 45 euro for just an upgrade is a lot of money I think. Should have been a lot less or free for all those people who purchased right in the beginning. I bought mine back in October 2015! I'm feeling very sad about this and although I would love to see the new features am not thinking of upgrading :-(
Hi Edi. I was one of the first too (Early Dec 2015). But you know what, it was still one of the best digital drawing app purchases that I feel I have ever made. It seemed like a lot compared to other apps, for sure, but once I tried the demo, I simply could not help but purchase it.
I come from an illustration background, being trained way back in the early 80's, exclusively in 'traditional media'. I have since wandered away to the greener fields of graphic design, but I have always kept a desire to return to drawing and painting for years and had been dabbling with digitizer and tablets for many years now.
One of the great excuses I have used to NOT get myself back into drawing/rendering again is that I simply do not have the space, or the time and MONEY needed to re-equip myself to my old illustration studio days -- and frankly, the physical space discipline it requires to maintain. Maybe that's what really excited me about digital art. You CAN take it with you. Anywhere. And boy, is cleanup so much easier (not to mention 'undo-ing'!)
So I looked at Rebelle and thought, hey -- that's easily the price I would pay for a good WN sable brush and man, all I have to do when I'm done a session is click 'Save'. I'm in!
Since getting Rebelle, I have had the fun of showing it to other creative workers -- designers, illustrators, recreational watercolour enthusiasts/teachers. Live, and on-line. Nearly anyone who tried it was suitably amazed. Even much older artists who have the bare minimum experience with all things digital. And whenever I find myself with my stylus tablet, and some time to spare, booting up Rebelle is one of my favourite ways to use that time.
What I'm trying to say is that this isn't simply a product upgrade. For me, anyhow -- it's a dream upgrade. And I think, somehow, Peter and the EM team 'get' this. They seem to understand the 'mission'. That is, to deliver the most realistic natural media experience you can get (and afford!) in a cross-platform app that is thoughtfully crafted to deliver that experience.
I probably would be prepared to pay MORE than what they are asking for the upgrade because I understand -- somewhat -- what kind of sacrifices and skill and teamwork are required to pull of something like this. A product that redefines the market. (I have two brothers who have been software developers for decades now).
So it's up to you, of course. And you know, if Rebelle had been folded, or been bought out by a giant player and taken out the back and buried behind the garden shed -- I would still feel a lot of gratitude towards EM for what they've accomplished with the first version. But this, this is something new. And very exciting.
And how many top sable brushes would go through in a year and a half? Or paints? Or canvases? How much time would you have spent maintaining and cleaning your studio in that same time frame?
Rebelle 2 is the Kolinsky Sable of available painting apps. I consider the price and functionality and potential enjoyment that they're offering with this new version to be an absolute bargain.
And I'm very pleased to be able to keep the digital media dream I share with Escape Motions alive and well by supporting this upgrade. I hope you may eventually see it that way too!
Cheers.
And happy painting!
Thank you very much Bob Roach for your beautiful reply. Working as a graphic designer myself the last 22 years, I truly understand your vision. Started of as an artist way back in the 80's I do believe that this time and age digital media is THE thing. I'm working with Corel Painter X a lot but will not ever forget the traditional media though!!! I love my studio! I only was startled by the price at first but had a good night sleep and thought 'Hey what the heck, it's worth it...' Some things this software can do Corel Painter can't (yet). So will upgrade and probably be happy I did :-) So thanks again and happy painting yourself! www.edithknijf.com
Edi, I'm glad you went ahead with the upgrade, and that you're continuing to support the development of Rebelle.
Corel Painter does have some wonderful features, and I still boot up my old version now and then. And I remember when they bought Painter after Genuine Fractals went. (I still have very fond memories of the time I spent in the original GF version! It was a real evolutionary leap in digital painting.)
One of the great things I like about Rebelle though, is how the focus is still on the brush experience and all the decisions about minimizing screen clutter and features that this philosophy entails.
And of course the quality of the digital watercolour emulation. I mean, watercolour that looks and acts so much like 'non-virtual' watercolour.
It's this 'seat of your pants' interaction with the 'paper' and previous strokes that they've managed to capture digitally that is so impressive. And utterly irresistible for natural media junkies like you and I. Predictable -- but only to a limited degree. I think it's this unpredictability though that gives watercolour the reputation of being terrifying and totally engaging at the same time.
Enjoy your digital painting with Rebelle 2!
May your brushes be forever new!
why upsets the old users by just 10 dollars
Those "just 10 dollars" are most likely there to make sure that one of the team members can get a sallary and continue working to keep the program going.
paid and upgraded
I did upgrade today. Thank you. :) I'm really geeked up. I tried for a few hours now as I didn't want to pester you awesome folks but I can't seem to get the same canvas effect as R1 though. I tinkered with the preferences/settings but flow of the brush is not really interacting with the canvas like I'm used to (on R2). For R1 if I go to new canvas, click on canvas, apparently I was using paper_1 with 100% texture visibility and 100 texture scale. On R2, I think it's now called Aquarelle 2. At 100 texture visibility and 100 texture scale and the default 50 paint structure it looks not as nice as R1. I did play around with the brush creator settings as well as tried to figure out if it's because my layer was/was not wet. Heck if I know what I'm doing. hehe Oh also, can you make it where the blending options in R1 are also in R2? I understand we can make our own brushes now but it would be nice to at least have the basics (with inclusion with the soft and hard option). Thank you in advance for any suggestions. I love it so far.
Hi...At the bottom of Brush creator, there is a Canvas setting. You can increase texture slider for make canvas texture more visible
Thank you so much Martin! I tinkered with it per your suggestion and got the canvas not to act/look so crazy. I appreciate it! <3 Thank you again for your help.
Hi Crystal, we made a lot of changes so brushes I made may look differently than in the first version, but I think there are all options to set them so they can look same. Maybe I will make a pack of brushes which will behave like in v1. :)
Hi Peter! Please note that I was totally not complaining. I've been like a little kid at Christmas since I downloaded this bad boy. R2 is still awesome. I only messed with my watercolors and ink (like usual hehe) but plan to tinker with everything else later. I like how the pencil tool acts for me now as well. I was able to play with my settings and I got it to work a little more like R1 (with blending/brush strokes). I'm sorry for the trouble. You and your team are the best. Here is my first try at R2 shenanigans. http://starduskmoon.deviant... <3
Just upgraded and it all looks great. Is there a way I can import my preferences from the previous version so I don't have to go through the pain of setting them all back up again? Also is there a way to load my previous workspace settings too? It would help me so much to get up and running quickly. Thank you!
Unfortunately it is not possible to import them, they are not compatible. But we will add this option to one of the next updates, so it will be possible in the future. I am very sorry for this inconvenience.
Thanks Peter, I use the Surface Pro 3 and with Rebelle 1 the pen eraser works perfectly but I am unable to get it to work in V2. I set the Tools (hold) settings eraser option to pen eraser and tablet to Microsoft Ink just like I did in the old version. Am I missing something?
