It has been two years since we released Rebelle’s first version. Time flies so fast, don’t you think? After we released version 1.5 back in September with more than 40 features the time has come to start developing a new, better, faster Rebelle. ‘What features should we include in the next upgrade?’ - well, that was the question we never had to ask!

From the beginning we know which path should Rebelle follow, our vision is always the same - to make the creative process as fluent as possible. Since the initial release, we have gathered hundreds of user-suggested features, changes, and improvements that were such a massive inspiration for us! Some suggestions were truly unique, many of them were similar. We reviewed every idea and chose the most essential to implement.
Essential does not mean quick, unfortunately. Some features took more time than expected, but that did not stop us from thinking positively. Right now we’re proud to announce that the new Rebelle is about to be born soon with many powerful features and changes. In this blog we’d like to introduce the first of them:
Stencils & Masking Tools
One of the most user-suggested features were without a doubt watercolor masking fluid and stencils. Masking fluid (also known as liquid frisket) is a very handy technique used by fine art watercolorists to preserve white areas that would be too tiny or complex to paint around. The idea is to put a special pigmented liquid composed of rubber latex on areas of work to protect them when color is applied in broad washes.

We tried to think of the best way to implement masking fluid - should we develop a new tool or not? We decided not to because, in fact, it is absolutely unnecessary in the world of digital painting compared to the traditional technique. We made it possible to use every tool as a masking fluid instead, so in Rebelle 2 you will be able to use your favorite tool and brush to paint a mask and change it into a stencil.
For masking purposes you can use stencils - just grab ink, pencil or any other tool, paint a mask on the canvas and create a stencil from it. You can create the stencil either from the current layer or from the selected area. Manipulation with stencils is very easy - you can resize, rotate and move them and if you have a tablet with multi-touch features, simply use your fingers for manipulation. Rebelle 2 comes with default stencils but you can import any image file or paint your own very quickly.

Because Rebelle is well-known for its watercolors we did not stop here and pushed stencils’ behavior even further - not only the paint is prevented from the place where the stencil is placed but also water and wet painting take stencils into consideration. For example, if you wet a layer where the stencil is placed the whole layer will get wet except the area covered by the stencil. This works the other way around too - if a stencil is placed on the wet layer and you hit the ‘Dry the layer’ button - voila! - everything is dry except the stencil area. You can combine stencils with dry and wet areas, let the water flow and create unique beautiful watercolor effects.

Stay tuned for another feature announcement coming next Tuesday! By the time let us know in the comments how excited you are to play with the new version, we’ll pick one lucky winner who’ll get a free copy of Rebelle 2 :)

Purchased and installed Rebelle 2 and at first worked fine. Now it crashes on loading every time. Running windows 10 creative. Any suggestions, please? (Tried uninstalling and reinstalling - same problem occurs).
Hi John,
Please go to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Escape Motions\Rebelle 2 and delete the whole "Data" folder.
Then run Rebelle 2 again (you will need to enter your registration details).
How does it work now?
Peter
I had a similar problem and this worked for me after getting directions from Veronika. I appreciate how you all help us so promptly with good solutions to our problems. Thanks so much. My Rebelle 2 works perfectly now on both pc and Yoga Book.
Hi guys, thank you so much for your support. After long months of development this is a dream come true! We are excited about release of Rebelle 2 (next Tuesday!) and would like to give a free copy to @bettypiper:disqus . The whole Escape Motions team is looking forward to your feedback on the new version, I hope you'll enjoy it to the fullest :)
I am to excited for words right now. I just cann't wait to get the new program. Hugs to you all and many, many thanks. ????
I was going to ask about brush creation and manipulation but you answered before I could ask! Outstanding! I'm excited for the new release! Many thanks to you and Team Rebelle for adding all the new features. Are there any plans to simulate adding salt, alcohol, or other additives to washes?
We have few salty tests.. will see ;)
Can't wait to try the new Rebelle 2. If it's as good as you say.. I'll have to recommend it to my Painter friends.
You have to try yourself! :)
Excited with the new features, especially that stencil feature! I do hope the brushes are bigger and also, please add in larger canvases as well! Kudos to the team!
Thanks!
Very excited for this new release. I'm curious though, as an owner of the current version, are there any upgrade paths?
Please read the last blog, you will find all info there.
Thanks :)
Yes please! I have had the Rebelle itch since the first release but haven't made the time to scratch that itch beyond my many privately held experiments. I'm feeling good timing afoot for some quality time with Rebelle!
Thank you David!
good idea... Very much looking forward to...
Thank you Chen! :)
I own a earlier version of Rebelle. Are upgrades included? If not, how much?
Hello, please read the last blog, you will find all info there.
Also I plan to capture and use the paint motion and incorporate it into some sort of 3D CG video. It would be nice if the app could export the frames, along with alpha (and thickness, when available). I can capture the motion now but only to the degree that screencasting software can record it.
Yes that would be cool, we will see what we can do with that.
It's very good as is, but larger brush radius would be nice. (fingers crossed)
We just released a blog about the new brush engine.
Cool. A brush pen take would be cool too. Can I also get a free copy of Rebelle 2? XD
:)
Wow wow wow! Stencils look so much fun and I can't wait to get playing with them.
:) It adds a new dimension into painting.
As someone who also does 3D I'd like a thickness channel. That could be handy.
The painting is actually 3D, or 2.5D, it has a height information which could be used as bumpmap or normalmap in 3D application.
STENCILS!? I would have never even guessed, with all the things that Rebelle can do, that stencils would make an appearance.
Few years ago I would say exactly the same, but because of wet paint diffusion, it is a new dimension in digital art.
I'm super stoked about this. The watercolor tools for this program are the best I've ever tried. I've never seen blending like what you guys have accomplished with this program. I'm glad it's getting added functionality now. It was a bit hard to accomplish what I wanted before, but with these features I think that won't be a problem anymore.
Oh yes and more is coming! ;)
I´m so excited that I would most certainly name my next child Rebelle! :)
It's a beautiful name :)
I m so excited to hear about the Rebelle 2. What an eye opener for artists of all aspects. This company is innovative and is always striving for more. I LOVE IT ????
Thank you Victoria! :)
Are you kidding me? How much fun is yet to come with the exciting new stencil feature! I can't wait. It's like magic happening in front of our eyes on screen. Go Rebelle 2 !!!
No kidding! So much fun awaits you Anna! :) Thanks so much.
My daughter and I both love Rebelle! I'm so excited there will be a new one!
Thanks Jess :))
