After a year and a half of dedicated development, we’re thrilled to announce that Rebelle 8 is coming at the end of Q3 this year! Packed with exciting new features, performance improvements, and innovative creative tools, this version marks one of our most ambitious updates yet.
For artists eager to explore what's coming in Rebelle 8, we’re excited to offer Early Access before the official release. Starting in late June or July, Early Access gives you the opportunity to try out the new features firsthand, share feedback, and eventually play a part in shaping the final version.
You know us — with every Rebelle release, our mission has always been to blend cutting-edge technology with creativity that allows us to come as close to reality as possible. Rebelle 8 is no exception. One of its standout features is a bold leap forward in impasto rendering and delivering richer, thicker, and more textured brushstrokes.
This improvement is powered by significant technological progress from our development team. By implementing raytracing and environment mapping, Rebelle 8 will render the depth and realism of traditional oil painting like never before, bringing a whole new dimension to your canvas.

RealShader: Photorealistic Lighting of Oil Paintings
Environment mapping, also known as reflection mapping, is a graphics technique used to make objects look reflective. Instead of calculating real-time reflections, it uses a pre-made image that represents the surrounding environment. This texture is then mapped onto the object to simulate how it would reflect its surroundings, making it appear shiny or metallic without using complex lighting calculations.
In Rebelle 8 Pro, we’ve created RealShader - a new generation of realistic Rebelle materials using real photos as environment maps. These maps simulate how light interacts with thick paint, making your brushstrokes look more lifelike.
You will be able to choose from three built-in maps in the Visual Settings panel:
- Environment 1 - The new environment reflects light the most.
- Environment 2 - The new environment with a more subtle shine.
- Legacy - An environment similar to Rebelle 7 lighting without NanoPixel.
This creates a synergistic effect with soft shadows to achieve a much deeper, more realistic oil painting effect.

SoftShadows: Shadows Based on Raytracing
Raytracing is a technique that mimics how light behaves in the real world to create realistic images. It traces the path of light as it interacts with objects in a scene, helping simulate effects like reflections, shadows, transparency, soft lighting, and even color distortions seen through glass. This method allows digital images to look much more natural and visually rich by accurately modeling how light moves and bounces.
In Rebelle 8 Pro, we’ve brought this powerful technology into a real-time painting environment - oil brushstrokes can cast realistic shadows, reflect light based on their shape and color, and exhibit a sense of three-dimensional volume, all while you’re painting.
Left: RealShader ON | Shadows OFF Right: RealShader ON | Shadows ON
Because the raytracing takes color and shape into account, white strokes reflect more light and appear brighter, while darker tones absorb more light, casting deeper shadows. This gives artists precise visual feedback and control over their painting’s depth, realism, and lighting, all in real time. It’s a big leap forward for digital oil painting.
NanoPixel 2: Improved NanoPixel
Rebelle 8 Pro introduces a major upgrade to its NanoPixel technology, now offering a sharper and more detailed zoom experience across the entire canvas.
Compared to the first NanoPixel version, the upgraded system uses new, larger, and sharper texture maps. As a result, structures in oil paint, especially thick impasto strokes, appear noticeably more defined and crisp, enhancing depth and realism in your artwork.
Compared to Rebelle 7 Pro, which supported image export up to 4×4 upscale, Rebelle 8 Pro now allows for up to 20×20 (2000%) NanoPixel export, providing dramatically higher resolution and precision ideal for large-format prints or close-up views of brushwork and textures.
The export size is capped for all formats at 32,000 × 32,000 pixels, except TIFF (which has unlimited size), a practical limit for handling ultra-high-res images without overloading system memory.
Moreover, thanks to environment mapping, the fine details in your strokes are now more realistic. For example, we captured a photo of a gray-painted sphere and used it to create one of the texture maps, enhancing the realism of the brushwork.

Hi - there are some issues about the HUE slider in the color wheel. I would like to know if you have noticed it on Rebelle7.
For example - When I select a red on the color wheel - and paint it in the Canvas - the hue does not match. It looks way warmer. So - in canvas it looks orange.
My monitor is calibrated - a professional DELL - 99,9% of Adobe RGB.
And this not happens with other softwares - Like Adobe Photoshop.
And I use Pigment Mixture in Layers.
Thank you.
Is there a mixer-brush equivalent in terms of multiple colours in one stroke in the new version?
bonjour,
j attend avec impatience la ver8
j ai rebelle depuis ca premiere ver
et je l utilse regulierement
Thanks a lot for your support Jc Piquet! :)
I’ve used Rebelle off and on since version 3 and purchased upgrades with each iteration to support its development. I like the program but have had issues with the interface getting in the way and tend to use Painter more often as a result so I’m hoping the upcoming changes will include a more streamlined user interface where it’s more out of the way of the artwork being created. For me, workflow is everything when it comes to digital art. I’m looking forward to trying Rebelle 8 out as soon as possible and hope it supersedes all other programs of this kind. Naturally, I’ll be purchasing it because the dev’s have been so good about keeping the price reasonable.
Hi Lynn, What does a streamlined interface mean to you? What do you think could be improved? Could you please send us an email with more concrete suggestions at [email protected]? That would really help us. Thank you!
Honestly, I have been very happy with Rebelle, I got a license in a pack with for art software in Humble bundle a few years ago and I was so impressed with the software that I got the pro upgrade almost immediately and have kept Rebelle as my main to-go art software until this today.
I hope that the software will continue to get even better with the next version.
Wonderful I create a lot of thick impasto brushes & work & this will help
The full version of Rebelle 8 will be released by the end of Q3 2025, so it seems unlikely that there will be a major discount event for the new version in November... I wonder if we’ll have a pre-order promotion like we did for Rebelle 7? Starting at $19.99 with tiered pricing increases—sounds pretty good, right? $9.99 would be even more amazing, haha! This year marks the 10th anniversary of Rebelle, and with the big feature update, a lower pre-order price would be the best deal for both previous customers and new users alike.
Sounds interesting. I bought version 7 in August last year, I think. I'm assuming there is a discounted upgrade path?
Can I ask, will we be able to adjust the direction and angle of the light source? Say we wanted to emulate painting with an uplight instead of it coming from the top left of the image.
Thank you!
This would be not possible at the moment.
Rebelle 7 est déjà fantastique... J'imagine déjà ce que sera Rebelle 8 - BRAVO d'avance
Merci beaucoup pour vos mots si encourageants!
Can't wait to try this new version!
So exciting!!!
My wish list:
1. A bit more sophisticated touch control—prevent touch from painting and only allow interface interactions (selecting tools, pinch zoom, panning, etc)
2. Color jitter!!!
To add a bit more detail on the touch feature, Wacom Cintiq's palm rejection is very clumsy at best. They've been so for years, not sure if they will be able to fix it. Sure I can use it with touch turned off, but the productivity gain from being able to zoom and pan with your fingers without having to rely on keyboard is just too much to lose.
So as is, even when I wear a glove to prevent it, my palm will frequently leave paint marks on the canvas, and often, because my attention is at the tip of the pen not under my palm, I'll realize this much after, making it difficult to fix without using undo, which will remove the progress I've made.
Considering how ubiquitous Wacom is, there is probably a great value in limiting touch input to just interface interactions such as zooming, panning, and selecting tools and options. Adobe Fresco (on iPad) is a good example—even though Apple has a much better palm rejection, Fresco still has this option to limit touch input to just iterface interactions.
Please consider this!!!
You can limit the touch feature to UI only in Preferences.
Gimme, gimme, gimme!
Please for the love of god add color jitter I'm begging you
In a new blog post we are talking about color jitter as well :)
LETS FUCKING GOOOOO
I never thought about Raytracing for digital art. Interesting.
I think RealShader looks best with shadows on, and I like Environment 2.
I think this blog post failed to make clear that this is just a small part of the new features, not everything. So heads up!
There are over 40 new features coming, we will be sharing more in our upcoming blogs.
I loooove these few new features and look forward to the next ones and other improvements.
