In the last blog post, we announced the upcoming arrival of a brand new Rebelle 3 that will feature ultra-realistic watercolor papers and an authentic blow tool, support for various watercolor behavior via the new ‘Visual Settings’ panel and a new ‘DropEngine’. Today, we’d like to introduce another set of features that will make you fall in love with this software even more: ‘Masking Fluid’ layer, Ruler & Perspective tools, Reference Image, Image Preview & Canvas size tool.
‘Masking Fluid’ layer
Last year, Rebelle 2 introduced various tools for creating a mask on canvas including selections and stencils. With stencils, you could simply grab ink, pencil or any other tool, paint a mask on the canvas and create a stencil from it. Or you could create a selection and turn it into a stencil with just one click. Rebelle 3 will go even further and feature a ‘Masking Fluid’ layer which locks non-transparent pixels of the layer. When painting on the ‘Influenced layer’, all pixels will be masked by the ‘Masking Fluid Layer’. This is a quick and easy way of coloring sketches and images.
Straight line, Ruler & Perspective tools
The next Rebelle version will bring new possibilities for drawing straight lines and perspectives.
The fastest way to paint a straight line in Rebelle 3 is to press a [Shift] key, set the starting point, press the mouse button or a pen to set the ending point and naturally draw the line between the points. It is a beautiful and simple tool probably available only in Rebelle.
You can paint the straight lines also with the new Ruler tool. You can lock the control points if you don’t wish to move the ruler, or paint with a freehand, so the lines will not be so strict and artificial when painting.
The new Perspective tool will act as an assistant for drawing perspectives. You will be able to select from one point, two or three-point perspective. You can lock vanishing control points, lock the horizon or also paint with a freehand.
‘Reference Image’ panel
The ‘Reference image’ panel was one of the most demanded features from Rebelle users. This panel will serve as a visual guide while you paint. You will be able to place the panel anywhere on the screen, docked or floating, and open a reference image, sketch or photo into it. You can Zoom in/out the image or desaturate the image with the ‘Greyscale’ button.

‘Preview’ panel
In addition, Rebelle 3 will feature another new panel which is very useful for all artists no matter their style. Preview panel is very practical when you work on detail but you don’t want to zoom in & out all the time to see the whole picture. This panel can be set to fullscreen mode and placed on a secondary monitor, so you have a nice large preview of your painting.

‘Canvas Size’ tool
Another great news is the implementation of ‘Canvas Size’ - a new tool that will serve for cropping, scaling and resizing your work. Resize the canvas interactively by using the control points, or by entering the desired size of a new canvas in the edit-boxes. You will be also able to resize the image and change its DPI. When cropping a paper with the deckled edges, the newly created canvas edges will nicely adjust so you don’t lose the edges on any side.
Pricing & Availability
Rebelle 3 will be available on our website from April 30th, 2018 for the full price of $89.99. My name is claude messier ([email protected]) and i purchase rebelle v. 2.1.5 to the morning of the 30 april 2018.
I don't be able to make an upgrade to the rebelle v.3 (on your site, only the upgrade to 39.99 $ is possible, not the free one for theses buyers (like me) who has purchases his copy within the last two month. Please excuse my english because i am a french person from quebec, canada.
Please, help me.
Hi! We will send newsletter today with a link for upgrade.
Thank you Peter, everything is OK: thank you for your speed and professionalism. The rebel v3 is really an awesome software. And what a superb interface! Have a nice day.
Hi Peter,
I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but I missed this last update (about the release date) and went ahead and purchased my upgrade for Rebelle 2, thinking the new update was still some time away and would be free (since the purchase was made after March 1st).
Now when I want to upgrade from 2 to 3, it says it will cost $39. I assume I would have gotten a better deal with upgrading from v1, right? I'd really like to purchase v3, but having never even used v2, I'd rather do a v1 to v3 upgrade.
Any ideas, solutions?
Thanks in advance,
Zsolt
Hi! we will send newsletter today with a link for upgrade.
Hi guys, thanks for all the love! We've chosen Alexander Déboir to win Rebelle 3. We're working hard on bringing you Rebelle 3 on Monday, April 30th. Hope you'll like the new version as much as we do :)
Wow *.* thank you very much this is really great! I also show this tool to my friends and I visited the video game jam today :) all artists didn’t know this program and I am sure you will get a lot of more fans soon :)
WHEN!!!!
when will this version be available?
April 30th!
All I want for my birthday today is Rebelle 3.
Of course, a little patience would be nice too. (5 days worth should do)
Of all the new features? I think it will be a toss-up between the Masking Fluid layers and the Straight Line/Ruler/Perspective tools. But probably the Masking Fluid. I mean, that looks like such a time-saver. It will likely pay for the upgrade in less than a single job.
But that doesn't mean I don't deserve to win a free copy! (I mean, hey -- it's my birthday!)
Has the glitchiness with the Qt5 viewport drawing been fixed for this version?
Qt5 framework is not always working as we wish, but we try to find a way to solve the obstacles.
I'm really excited about the Preview Panel and Reference Image (yes!!) options. I'm always excited about improvements to the watercolor and drop engines. Thank you to the team for continuing to work on new features!
The masking fluid will be great to have. The hand drawn look will also be useful. Will there be line smoothing? How about internal recording of the actions?
There is a Line smoothing (Lazy mouse) already available in v2, in Preferences. Recording of the actions is nit implemented yet.
Where can I find out more about the lazy mouse feature? Video?
I wanted so much to have the canvas resizing and reference picture features!! It's amazing :D
*runs around in circles like a dog* why isn't 30th April yet?! I wanna play with this new version :O
As I mentioned a year ago "reference picture"and "canvas size" were two features high on my wish list. So I'm very happy about these!
The Rulers are killer feature in my opinion. When month ago EscapeMotion asked about missing features in their software, I'm going to tell about rulers. It is really hard for amateur painters to draw without perspective grid or ruler, and I'm sure, many of them have used another software to draw sketch, which then will be painted in Rebelle. But now things are changing, as I see.
This is great addition. Or even more than great, because of very creative realization of this one.
Surely, Rebelle was the best natural painting application. But now it becomes best of the best, when it combines easy to use and most plausible painting engine with convenient digital arts tools.
I love your tool and the new features like different papers!! Most time I take a photo of my empty watercolor sketchblock and use it as my paper background for digital painting :)
I also cannot wait to try out the new watercolor engine. I will create a black and white Hulk portrait with green colors runs from the top in his face. Your fluid mask will also help me for creating this art project
Because I have an allergy of most real traditional colors you give me the opportunity to have the look of real watercolors. At the moment I am using Artrage and Expresii but maybe I could change to just one tool, Rebelle :)
Hi Alexander,
thanks so much for your amazing support. We would like to choose you as the luck winner of the upcoming Rebelle 3. Please send us an email at support[at]escapemotions.com on Monday. After Rebelle 3 is released, we'll send you a full version.
Thanks and cheers!
Definitely the Freehand tool! I always love when digital art gets closer to looking handmade, and paired with the ruler tool it seems especially powerful. You're picking the right priorities with this software, bravo!
‘Masking Fluid’ layer is a good to add color way...
Definitely the "canvas size" for me ! It's a feature I was sorely missing.
Definitely the straight line, ruler and perspective tools. It 'll be an immense help in blocking out architectural objects for me.
What will the pencils be like in the version 3? I'd love to able to imitate the look of a thick nib lead, like a Koh-I-Noor mechanical pencil and maybe an improved 3B & 4B look and feel. Or maybe I should just play around with Rebelle 2 a bit more to achieve those effects?
Already in Rebelle 2 you can imitate different brushes, but in v.3 I believe they will be a look better.
